Why do people devalue empathic responses believed to be edited by AI?

Because empathy is a predictive social signal: genuine human empathy updates expectations about closeness and social trust.

The signaling function of empathy collapses when it is cheaply outsourced.

This study of four cohorts of French schoolchildren shows that the gender gap in math (girls falling behind) begins essentially immediately as soon as kids start school. They use the natural variation in kids' ages at school start to show that it's school entry, not age, that triggers the change.
Rapid emergence of a maths gender gap in first grade - Nature
Boys and girls exhibit very similar maths scores upon school entry, but a gender gap in favour of boys becomes highly significant after 4 months of schooling, which increases with years of schooling,&...

📢New paper out today in @cognitionjournal.bsky.social!

Does the value of an unchosen option — inferred through counterfactual reasoning — spread to related items in memory, similar to how the value of a chosen option — acquired through direct experience — does?

In short, yes!
The inferred value of unchosen options spreads to related items in memory
Counterfactual thinking — considering what could have come of choosing the other path — can facilitate inference. Previous studies have demonstrated t…

Finally listened to this lecture -- highly recommended if you've ever been confused about fixed effects vs. random effects models. Love that the framing starts from group-level confounding -- here's a problem, what could be solutions (rather than: here's a model, what are its features).
This time I try to explain group-level confounding and some ways to deal with it. Lecture B04 of Statistical Rethinking 2026 - fixed effects, Mundlak machines, latent Mundlak machines, intro to social network analysis and the social relations model. Full lecture list: github.com/rmcelreath/s...
