Cornell Student Groups Launch Renewed Divestment Campaign: Students Not Bombs Ithaca NY - The Cornell chapters of Students for Justice in Palestine, Jewish Voice for Peace, and Young Democratic Socialists of America are launching a joint campaign to fight against the University's complicity in genocide. As students whose tuition sustains Cornell, we refuse to allow our university to invest in weapons manufacturers and unethical research, while neglecting its duty to contribute to affordability on campus and in the Ithaca area. On Monday, August 24, the first day of class at Cornell, Students Not Bombs will host a press conference outside Day Hall. The event will begin at noon and feature Ithaca City Council Members alongside speakers from Students for Justice in Palestine, Jewish Voice for Peace, Young Democratic Socialists of America, and Cornell Graduate Students United. We will take questions from the press and present our demands to Cornell President Michael Kotlikoff. Background Since 2023, over 73,000 Palestinians, more than 21,000 of those children, have been murdered in Israel’s ongoing genocide. Cornell is currently invested in numerous military companies supplying Israel with the technology needed to commit these atrocities. Not only does U.S. and international law mandate the termination of all military aid to Israel, but so does the Cornell Board of Trustees' own 2016 ethical investment guidelines. This procedure requires the University divest from companies engaging in “morally reprehensible activities” such as “apartheid, genocide, human trafficking, slavery and systemic cruelty to children." Cornell’s complicity in genocide does not end with its investments in weapons manufacturers. By hosting in-person and online events, Cornell Career Services funnels students into institutions that underpin both the genocide in Palestine and mass deportations of immigrants in the United States. Cornell’s research into military and surveillance technol… While Cornell spends millions to empower genocide through its investments, recruitment, and research, student housing, transportation and other services remain disastrously underfunded. The University has intentionally withdrawn funds from the TCAT bus system despite 70% of its ridership being Cornell affiliated. Its parasitic tax-exempt status starves Ithaca's public schools and other vital institutions of resources that should be used to enhance the mission of education and diversity that Cornell supposedly stands for. Critical institutions such as co-operative houses and Anabel’s Grocery continue to lack necessary funds while excessive rent increases place undue stress on working-class students. Students Not Bombs is issuing the following demands to Cornell's administrators and Board of Trustees: 1. Divest from weapons manufacturers, including BAE Systems, Boeing, Elbit Systems, General Dynamics, L3Harris Technologies, Leonardo, Lockheed Martin, Northrop Grumman, RTX and ThyssenKrupp. 2. Sever all ties with the Technion-Israel Institute of Technology while preserving Cornell Tech and its graduate student jobs. 3. End all Career Services events with and job-posting of institutions underpinning genocide & deportation, from weapons manufacturers to ICE and CBP. 4. Create an independent ethical research review board consisting of hired students, faculty, staff and outside human rights experts. 5. Pay its fair share to Ithaca through investments in TCAT, public schools and other public services. 6. Redirect internal investments to prioritize student affordability, fund Anabel's Grocery and co-operative housing, halt rent increases to dorms and provide a living wage to graduate workers. 7. Diversify academic opportunity, support currently underfunded departments,​ increase opportunities in STEM with a specific focus on supporting socially beneficial engineering, and create a Palestinian Studies minor and major.
