He’s not socialist or anything but does politely talk to the guy for a few minutes and then asks if there is a newsletter.

Unlike smaller churches, to even become a Catholic priest in the first place requires you to effectively have a masters degree. Bishop? a PhD.
So regardless of what you might feel about the man, you can’t say he isn’t educated.
