Suzanne Vega releases “Luka” 39 years ago this weekend. She said she once received a fan letter about it:

“Dear Suzanne,

Luka is the most compelling piece of music I’ve heard in a long time. There are no words 2 tell U all the things I feel when I hear it.

I thank God 4 U,
Prince”

Death in Reval: The Tallinn of Werner Bergengruen
One of the reasons for Bergengruen’s obscurity in Germany today might be that his writing is rich and sometimes too colourful, almost baroque in his descriptions

rahvaalgatus Metsaseaduse muutmiseks

Estonia is one of the greenest countries in Europe, and Estonians often boast of their cultural connection to nature.

But, as David Millington explains, in recent years large-scale logging has been changing the face of the country.

Thanks for this. I visited SE Estonia last summer and while it's still beautuful with a great deal of forest, I was struck by how much had gone since my last visit. Logging is an age-old industry around here but modern technology makes it easy to do it brutally and quickly.

Estonia was the only country where removals were higher than growth, with 11.6 million cubic metres removed compared with a net annual increment of 9.1 million.

That left Estonia with a net decrease of 2.5 million cubic metres of available timber in 2023.
Eurostat finds forest growth outpaces logging in 23 EU nations, but Estonia reports a worrying net loss of timber in 2023.
