Wham, Bam, Thank You, Slam - The Second Serve

I'll be doing some work for The Athletic during the Australian Open! I asked Jannik Sinner to reflect on the moment he considered quitting tennis today, and spun that into my first piece for them:

2025 was my first full year freelancing, and to my happy surprise I got enough published to do a summary thread!

I mostly wrote from bed, but I was at the very fun and hot Australian Open, and covered it for Defector. (Sans credential, but check back in a month.) defector.com/the-australi...

This, for me, is the funniest conversation between tennis players ever to happen on social media. 💀

A few weeks ago, I came across an article posted on the Australian Open website with the headline "Why Ben Shelton will win the Australian Open 2026".

I wrote about why I remain unconvinced.

Why Ben Shelton won’t win the Australian Open 2026
Ben Shelton has an energy to his tennis that is difficult to sustain consistently, especially against the very best.

Am I insane for taking Alcaraz's forehand over Federer's or Nadal's?!

Genuinely embarrassing look for the US Open.

Djokovic looks so damn tired in this first round match which means he's winning the title.

I think it would be fair to say this mixed-doubles tournament has traded legitimacy for mainstream popularity. I've seen more people than ever before talking about mixed-dubs but it does feel questionable to call it an actual major...

Regardless, I've had a great time with it!

I am irrationally excited about this, I'll always have a soft spot for Bernard tbh! 🙏
Lord Tomic just won the first set of round 1 US Open quallies. Sending thoughts and prayers he does a Raducanu.

Feel like we're all just waiting for Zverev to call here and he's just... not.

The actual worst thing about hinting for a job in media is that every job - even ones you think you might be qualified for! - are looking for someone with 5+ years experience, lol.

That was fucking excellent. Highly enjoy the Radders vs Sabalenka matchup. Gimme' moooore.

Radders is winning this and we all know it! 🫡
August 11, 2025 at 6:36 PM
After watching Jannik Sinner win his match in 59 minutes yesterday, I can't wait to watch Carlos Alcaraz cruise through the first set, drop the second from a break up, and win the third set breaker in a 3 and a half hour epic later on today. 🙏
August 10, 2025 at 3:12 PM
Radders' forehand down the line will win her more majors in the future, I swear!
August 9, 2025 at 9:05 PM
I think we can all agree that Emma Raducanu is winning the US Open this year.
August 9, 2025 at 8:23 PM
Winning your first tournament in front of a home crowd at 18 is absolutely fucking insane. Didn't think she had a chance and will happily admit that I was a fucking idiot for it!

Victoria Mboko! 🔥
August 8, 2025 at 12:21 AM
What I most liked about that match was that it properly felt like an 18 year old trying to make a huge breakthrough into the final of a huge event. Messy, nervy, all over the place, and, now and then, unbelievable ball-striking. 🔥
August 7, 2025 at 1:03 AM
It is almost 2 in the morning where I am but Victoria Mboko is simply timeless. Un-fucking-real.
