The other man pulled down Gyula’s lower eyelid and lowered his glasses to inspect the vampire’s eye. His own eyes were ice blue, piercing. “Have you had your ration today?” he asked. Gyula gritted his teeth. Betrayed by the dilation of his eyes. He couldn’t believe it. “Yes, but—” “I’m sorry,” the butcher said. “I’m afraid you’ll have to come back tomorrow.” “Please, man,” Gyula began. “I have had such a day.” He took a shuddering breath, squeezed shut his eyes. “Please.” The butcher’s warm touch lingered on his face for a moment as he assessed Gyula with those glacier eyes. His gaze moved over Gyula’s features and settled on his lower lip. On the split in his lower lip. Christ, this day just kept getting better. Gyula bit back the impulse to cry.

It's very funny to me that Ares and I generally diverge on the stories we tell. My werewolf story and his couldn't be more different, despite a shared interest in folklore and homosexuality. And his vampires are the opposite of mine.

Here, they have forgotten there is dignity in death. In the West, they say, the spirits stir. Miss Quincannon lacked the niceties that would have made her an amiable medium, and she has found them unneeded in her new role as nurse. The empathy that has made her amenable to the undead and her quick-thinking curtness, pressurised under the vast weight of the front, have made her a diamond. Where others have cracked she has remained, steadfast, solid. Who is to blame her, then, for speaking aloud to the dead? Their voices come loud as the gunfire, the great wailing, as they are expelled from bodies pulled apart like dough. In the snatched hours of restless sleep they clamour to her bedside with their burst heads, gas-burned eyes, and bayonet slit bellies. She feels the weight of them as they sit on her chest, desperate for that last set of eyes to fall upon them. At night she dreams of the faceless man. His head, bandaged, unspools in her hands. At the end of the gauze she finds herself staring into the black hole of his throat.
