Sunday gave us all a full day together. We enjoyed lovely meals; a ride on an historic streetcar; more Edmonton bike infrastructure, the @bikeedmonton.bsky.social bike valet, and well-marked bicycle way-finding. Thanks for the wonderful weekend, Edmonton.💗

We're in Edmonton this weekend. Sam is here for and fully engaged in a conference, so @beatriceaucoin.bsky.social and I are occupied by exploring on our own.

But reconnecting with the city as a couple ... It's been rather intoxicating.

On the last Friday of every month, my son and I get to come together in community, be jovial and sometimes a little boisterous, and experience an inner-city road network that feels uniquely human-centric: social, safe, calm, and under our management.

Thank you, @criticalmassyyc.bsky.social.🚲🌙✨

Sam and my adventures took us here today. Being here brought together two of Sam’s favourite things: celebrating his Indigenous heritage and trains. Sam found the rock in trans flag colours with the word happy on it. He repatriated it to where it belonged at the nearby Medicine Wheel garden.

Sam and I finished the last book for our summer reading club today: Gender Queer by Maia Kobabe. We specifically chose eir book because it delves into topics relevant for 2SLGBTQIA+ people and is also on the UCP’s banned book list. The Internet Archive has it here:

“Do you ride your bike every day?”

“Most days.”

“I see you with it. In my country, I wasn’t allowed to ride bikes. Because woman. I’m going to learn to ride. When I do, I’m going to tell you.”

Thanks for telling me your story, Bahar. (I live for these moments.)

Home in YYC again! We rode the High Level streetcar before stopping for some beverages at Kaffa beside Red Bike. The cats had excellent cat sitter care this weekend, but they are happy we are home.

Had a vastly lovely weekend in Edmonton. We go for many reasons — okay, we go for LRT & streetcar — but our trip is particularly inviting because of extensive, networked bike infrastructure. The bike lanes are so vibrant in Edmonton and relied on by a wide demographic. Bravo, YEGCC & advocates!

Had to check out Edmonton’s new downtown Park, O-Day’Min. It’s carved into the downtown grid and extends over 107 St., providing connections to LRT and flow-through for active modes. Lots of flexible and dedicated programming space, public washrooms — and it’s spurring mixed-use development.👍

Flix moved our pickup from downtown to the airport (due to the Stampede Parade route disruptions), so my resilient family and I rode our bikes and luggage to the airport (18kms!)to catch our bus and had a lovely time.

Of course, we also concluded our trip by bike (five more kms).
