What does the latest beaver science tell us? 🦫

People’s opinions on beavers vary widely, but early-stage education, ongoing engagement and rapid support can help create positive relationships between beavers and communities in their catchment.

A promising sign from a restored peatland in Kent 💧

The River Stour (Kent) IDB and partners have been restoring peatland habitats. Since then, beavers have been helping to keep the peatland wet through this prolonged dry period, while creating new and varied wetland habitats.

Who knew beavers created lawns?!

We've learnt a lot by watching the kits. They forage close to the water's edge, using their sharp teeth to 'mow' the grassy banks, creating open spaces where sunlight can filter down to the ground and hopefully encouraging different species to grow.

My column in this month's BBC Countryfile Magazine is all about Beavers & how we learn to co-exist with them. I for one am delighted, I never thought I'd hear of them on our chalkstreams. @riverkennet.bsky.social & @beavertrust.org held some brilliant community engagement events.

Why is grooming so important to beavers? 🦫

Beavers’ fur helps to insulate them from the cold and keep them buoyant. Through careful grooming and the application of oily secretions from a gland near the base of their tail, beavers keep a layer of insulating air trapped beneath their fur.

🦫 Beavers belong here.
International and national guidance says species reintroductions should take place within a species’ historic or ‘natural range’, supported by written records, oral traditions and physical evidence.

So, what does the evidence tell us about beavers in Britain?

It’s so rewarding to see kits at Glen Affric, a sign of a healthy population. 🦫

Like all reintroductions, this release took careful planning. Well-managed translocations like this support the restoration of beavers, in line with Scotland’s National Beaver Strategy.
The first #babybeavers born in #GlenAffric in 400 years! 🦫 A wonderful milestone for our reintroduction project with Forestry and Land Scotland (FLS) and @beavertrust.org

Exciting visitor to @nationaltrust.org.uk's Holnicote Estate beaver wetland! 🦫
You know those live wildlife cameras we've got? Well, they've captured footage of something we didn't expect to see...

A rare black-crowned night heron – a scarce visitor to the UK – so rare in the UK its distribution can’t be mapped.

And we spotted it on our beaver cam.

This is an important discovery with significant potential for Scotland, although the beavers we're reintroducing are a different species so we can't be sure if they would handle brackish water in the same way. www.earth.com/news/beaver-...

Across Britain, beaver kits (now 4-6 weeks old) are starting to emerge from the lodge, swimming in an adult’s wake or riding on a tail 🦫

Kits are born with open eyes, a dense coat and small incisors, dependent on their family, learning skills in the lodge. [1/2]
