Working with one studio across design and production cuts out a handover where things tend to get lost. No mix-up between what the designer approved and what actually landed with the printer.

Working with one studio across design and production means one fewer handover where things get lost — no version confusion between what the designer approved and what the printer received.

Spot colours and process colours aren't interchangeable, even when they look identical on screen. Mix them up and your 'brand colour' might print completely differently to what you approved.

Proofing before a print run isn't a formality. It's the last checkpoint before a mistake becomes a physical, expensive, un-editable object.

Some clients want the whole thing built from a blank page. Others just need their existing design turned into something a printer can actually run. I do both and honestly don't mind either way.

Reply-all chains on approval emails are their own special kind of chaos. Nine people, four opinions, one deadline quietly getting closer.

Minimum legible font sizes exist for a reason — mandatory warning statements aren't much use if nobody can actually read them without a magnifying glass.

Twenty-plus years and I still get a small kick out of catching an error before it becomes an expensive one. That feeling hasn't worn off.

For the marketers here, has a launch ever suddenly needed motion content you hadn't budgeted for? What forced that change?

Trapping is the tiny overlap printers add between colours so you don't get white gaps if the press is even slightly out of registration. Invisible when done right, obvious the second it isn't.

Working across FMCG, finance and hospitality means my week can go from wine labels to bank branding to pub signage without much warning. Keeps it interesting, keeps me on my toes.

Nothing quite like a client brief that's genuinely just three Google Image results and the words 'something like this but better.'

Had the classic call again this year: 'our agency designed this, can you just print it?' It was, once again, never just printing it.

Use-by and best-before aren't interchangeable on Australian packaging — they carry different legal weight and different consumer safety implications. Small phrase, big difference.

Three stakeholders, one tight deadline, and everyone with a slightly different read on what counts as 'on-brand.' That'll test how well you actually know a guideline.

The job is 90% invisible and 10% catching the thing that would've cost someone thousands if it slipped through. Most days you only hear about the 10%.

A 3D product animation for socials needs different source files to what a printer needs. Higher-res textures, clean vector paths, sometimes a full 3D model of the pack. Worth planning for both up front if you already know you'll need them.

PDF/X-1a is basically the industry's way of saying 'this file is print-ready, no surprises.' Send anything else to a printer and you're rolling the dice on fonts, colours, or missing bleed.

Detail-obsessed isn't really a personality quirk in this job. It's the entire job description.

Every studio has a 'we sent 50,000 units to print with a typo' story somewhere in the industry. I'm not saying it's mine. I'm not saying it isn't.
