Today's #BirdOfTheDay theme is #TheDivers. One of my favourite divers is the #PiedBilledGrebe, a little bird that will stake out a pond and systematically catch every fish in it. This one is very protective of its enormous sunfish.

Large, unmistakable woodpecker. Mostly black, with red crest and bold white stripes on head and neck. Flies with deep, rowing wingbeats, almost like a crow but more irregular; also look for mostly white underwings and white patches on upperwing. Pairs inhabit mature deciduous or coniferous forests with large trees. Makes large oval-shaped holes in decaying trees to search for insects. Listen for slow resonant drumming and loud clucking calls. Occasionally visits feeders in appropriate habitat, especially fond of suet.

For #BirdOfTheDay theme #Redheads, here's a red-whiskered bulbul, seen in Hong Kong. Its red cheeks give the bird its name but I'd say its pointy crest is a more distinguishing feature. (Also note it has a larger red patch at the other end 😆)

This male American Goldfinch looks like he just rolled out of bed after an all night bender as he molts out of breeding plumage.
A small yellow bird with black wings and cap on its head, and pinkish orange beak perches on an echinacea head. There are bald spots in his plumage around its neck and on its chest, one of his wing feathers is drooping out of place and the feathers on the top of his head are sticking up.
