My first never-to-see-the-light-of-day novel and my MFA thesis, had a Filipino male lead
I wasn't born in the Philippines. Never been an actor, except reluctantly.
Yet, my MFA professors insisted the lead was my self-insert.
It happens a lot to us POC writers.

Sort of an offshot of this, but I hate the internet trend of deciding any time a writer is drawing on personal experience that what they’ve written is a “self-insert.”

It would be better if it was KNOW MORE SO YOU CAN WRITE ABOUT IT.

I'm not gonna put a kid with terminal cancer in your feed, but he was Averythepokekid + his absolute JOY and enthusiasm over these pulls was really something. The rare card he pulled was Jirachi who "makes wishes come true" AND he pulled a Pikachu that "recovers from all special conditions." 😭😭😭

NYT has now independently corroborated all the major allegations against Susan Collins in the ProPublica report, including that investigators were prepared to move against her and then Trump intervened to shut it down. This put Trump in a position of exceptional and extortionate leverage over her.
