There is a certain peacefulness in the mornings, when the light is just right, slanting in from a low sun. The air, barely moving. A slight chill, but warm enough for shorts. Listening to good melancholy music that makes the world both sad and hopeful at the same time. It's a strange peacefulness.

First full true beta read in process. He's giving great feedback as he goes. Little niggling editing issues I've been hunting down and squishing. But he made it through the slow part of the book, and liked the dinner scene, which is one of my favorites.

Thoughts on this elevator pitch:

Expendable troopers, led by a captain haunted by the faces of those who died under his command, prove more resourceful than their Empire believes they can be.

Just testing stuff out.

Welp.. after rounds of thematic titles I settled on Ledgers of Unmarked Graves. So that is the book title till an Agent decides it isn't good enough.

Now to get money for a book cover

Thinking of changing the title of Book 1. The working title is Steam Company, but that feels kind of generic. New ideas: March of the Expendables or Souls on My Ledger. Comments welcome.

Too warm in my little town, but I worked on a house project for a bit, tearing out old tile in my kitchen. Haven't decided how much demo is needed. Playing it by ear.

Do you like character driven war stories? Do you like Steam Punk?
Do you like grounded magic systems?

Steam Company will def. scratch those interests, as soon as I get an agent. Follow along to see when it happens.

WoS chapter 6 rough draft done. Moving on to chapter 7. Also building out my Chapter Continuity sheet for WoS, so I can map the rest of the story. For a Panster, I'm finding some planning is actually helpful. Not every detail, but enough to get direction when the flow pauses.

Captain Frank Henries knows the cost of war, he’s seen it in the letters home, after the Empire of Bristol sent Notalaunt companies like his into the breach time and time again. (1/2)

Latest full manuscript edit done. Tightened a lot. Added some scenes, removed others. Streamlined the narrative, but kept a lot of the color and world building by moving it to plot chapters instead of info dumps. Wish I had a solid cast of Beta Readers, alas I don't trust easily.

Editing chapter 9 is giving me a headache. Changed the chapter POV so now I have so much cleanup. Joy of writing? Sigh

Oh and another Agent Passed as well kind of a down day. Feeling the imposter syndrome hard. Am I that bad and just fooling myself? Geh.. I'm not, damnit.

Well... When your writing coach sets you a challenge, and you end up knocking out 3000 words in about 3 hours, you can't complain to much. Now to fix the threads of what was yanked out. But that is for later.

Line editing reveals your worst tendencies in writing. Apparently I give too many wry smiles and raise to many eyebrows... Now to find new tics for my characters.

Editing SC again. Doing some tightening on the manuscript. Came to a better understanding of how this is supposed to work. Still usually takes me 5 or so passes to get it where it needs to be. So 90k words to slowly pound through for set dressing removal.

Today was yard work, then watching my son play on his playset. Climbing the ladder sliding down, again and again. Finally I set up my hammock and just relaxed for a bit. Some days are very nice.

Queries out for SC. I know it will be weeks, but damn I want this to work this round. Have to spend more time in QT and MSWL looking for good agent fits, then researching the hell out of them. So exhausting.

Good session with my writing group last night. Gave me focus on my first few chapters to make them great, rather than just good. I highly recommend finding a writing coach and a writing group that can both cheerlead for you, but be honest about improvement.

Well pretty good actually. 2700 words yesterday. Not to shabby. Cleaned up and proofed. On to chapter 4 of WoS.

Chapter 3 of SC is off to the writing group. We'll see how it goes over. It's a slightly ambitious chapter that establishes stakes and politics but comes in two different POVs. Considering the whole book, while focused on one primary POV - (1/2)
