Introductory Post: I’m Hirst, the guy in the shirt there. I like weird old games (especially imports) and arcades, based in the UK and (slowly) doing videos about games and that. Promise. If you want to hear dumb opinions, please follow, reposts appreciated as it’s quiet on here! Nice people only.

Can’t stop thinking about R U HUNGRY?
Looking at old games for sale and encountered this, so now you have to as well.

Just a warning for everyone, since Video Game Slopterica keeps being the most irresponsible YouTube Channel to exist these days.

The Banjo-Tooie Recompilation is NOT associated with us. It is entirely AI-generated. Both Zelda: Recompiled and Banjo: Recompiled have very clear No AI stances.

Official Game Gear appreciation post, because I still appreciate it to the point that I keep it on my desk. Used to play it in the car during Covid when the shops were shut.

Saw a page saying they wouldn’t recommend playing Master System games on a Game Gear due to the resolution scaling, then I played it anyway. Don’t tell me what to do!

I suppose one thing with dreadful AI stuff in the old game scene is anyone who you thought was a good sort despises it. It’s been nice to see people standing up against it. I’m a bit of an irrelevance so I can say whatever I like, but it’s nice that people with impact are saying it.

There’s more newly-created games being released, fan translations coming out, arcade games being emulated than you probably could ever play in your life time - all ones not using AI. There’s absolutely no reason to get involved with this AI shit. It’s like drinking from a puddle when you have a tap.
I think the retro community deserves to drown in AI garbage when major voices only share the concern of "Well they might not be maintained, but it's all up to the skill of the individual developer of the decomp" www.youtube.com/watch?v=mYZP...
Recomps and Decomps have taken over Retro Gaming...

The attitude of simply playing everything available to you, regardless of how it was produced or whether it’s even accurate to the real experience, is driving us up the fucking wall. Mindless, uncritical consumption is how we get Palmer Luckey releasing Game Boys built with murder drone parts.

I’ve seen the 9 games that shaped you thing but when I tried it, a lot of the covers were missing so I’m just going to do it down here…

Great article. My thoughts about generative AI game projects and translations are that they should be completely ignored, but also that people failing to disclose they’ve used it should be shunned. If nothing else it makes me want to champion the great work people are doing outside of the AI junk.
Today, I decided to dump all my thoughts about A.I. infecting the retro and Saturn scene into one cohesive article. In short, I am certifiably sick of this.
Is there any harm in using AI to work on — or entirely create — projects for the Sega Saturn and elsewhere in the retro gaming scene? Yes, PandaMonium says in this opinion column, equating such work to digital asbestos:

I think ultimately this should be the policy at this stage, if somebody sticks up an AI translation/hack simply don’t mention it. It does mean honest people will have to usually explain how they did it, but I’ve rarely seen a real hacker who wasn’t proud to show you how they figured it all out.
If we wanna cut these off at the source, stop sharing them, stop making videos about them, stop hosting them on your websites.

Stop giving talentless hacks the attention they crave. Stop rewarding them for defiling our hobbies.
Might just kill myself

My post about my dislike of AI translations went down well, but on a more positive note I think the very real translations happening are one of the reasons I think we’re living in a golden age of old games. Even disregarding the AI ones, there’s a great release every week or so!

The AI translation shitstorm makes me nostalgic for the days where I’d buy a Japanese game and have absolutely zero idea if I’d be able to extract gameplay from it by sheer trial-and-error. It was fun when it was a new game and there’d be a dozen of us on GameFAQs trying to figure it out as we went.

This went down well and the real game was Captain Tsubasa 2: World Fighters.
Top tip for anyone buying games as a gift, it’s really easy to make shitty fake cover art and swap it in as a fun surprise.

Here's the first footage of the cancelled SNES/SFC port of Railroad Tycoon to ever be posted online, captured from my promotional tape made by the would-be Japanese publisher. For a long time, the only evidence of the game's existence was two blurry Nintendo Power screenshots!

Update: I found this same machine working today but with a credit in it! Unfortunately the steering was out of whack and violently pulling right, so it was like driving a car that very badly needs the tracking doing. Slightly broken OutRun 2 is still better than many games though.

Reposting this so I remember it as it’s been one of the stumbling blocks to actually getting out any videos.
Aw thank you!

Honestly I was quite bad at it at first but it’s something you just atune to over time, so it’s mostly by ear but generally I try to keep voice somewhere near -3db, featured music around -6db and background music around -20db it can vary of course but that’s a good baseline 🙏

Great news for fans of niche aviation business games that play a bit like a turn-based board game and have an absolutely incredible soundtrack!
