the thing about this is that this isn't an AI problem. AI is *accelerating* the problem, but industry investment in training, mentoring and developing employees has been waning for decades, what's different is that it's going to hit white collar work in the way it's been hitting the trades for years
Btw, even among pro AI friends, this concern is ALL OVER THE PLACE. Devs wondering how we get senior devs if the ecosystem for junior devs goes away. Doctors talking about not needing interns. Lawyers not needing paralegals. There's an ecological aspect to this and we need a plan.

"it did nothing to improve affordability, just made landlords lower rent and offer 3 months free to new tenants"

serious question: are NIMBYs brain damaged?
It doesn’t make sense to me that a bill to build more homes “did nothing to improve affordability” but also investors are cutting rents because of all the new apartments tnledger.com/editorial/Ar...

this was the exact outcome that the "the economy under Biden (when unemployment was 3% and wages for lower-income workers were increasing rapidly) sucks" push was meant to engineer and it worked.
(NBC News) — It is now the least rewarding time to be a worker in the U.S. economy since the government started keeping track.

People kept quoting the “yet you participate in society” comic to me the other day when I mentioned this and no, man, not using free shit for killing time online (like Bluesky, ahem) because you find them unethical is the easiest thing in the world. Toughen up or be honest.

"Our current society seems to have built an ideological edifice around the fact that certain mental traits fetch the highest labor incomes right now. We don't just see that as a quirk of our current technological environment, but instead read huge meaning into it."

incredible that you can thanklessly work on something for 22 years and then be retroactively declared a hack because you used AI to do something that would otherwise be intractable for a single human to do in a timely fashion

“Attacks the left”

Hasan is not the left, he’s just a streamer who is literally filming himself yapping 24/7, of course he’s gonna say some dumb stuff from time to time. I genuinely do not care and this whole “scandal” is collectively lowering the IQ of everyone involved

Hijacker: Everyone stop talking. I am armed and I am taking control of this plane.

Guy from the Netherlands: Wow, in Netherlands we just purchase a plane if we want one. But typically we will bike somewhere

Guy who has been to Japan once: In Japan planes are rarely hijacked. It's a cultural taboo

i propose a Grand Compromise: all sides of this agree to adopt the same rule sports fans abide by. don't tell me about your fantasy league results or your claude projects unless i very explicitly ask
"A bunch of people would rather post on Race War Now Dot Swastika rather than Bluesky because you keep making fun of their imaginary computer friend" is a RESOUNDING endorsement for the concept of hostility.

Tucson and Phoenix basically don't use water.

Phoenix runs a massive nuclear power plant on wastewater (the only of its type in the world).
The thing that is happening is not that the explosion of growth in the southwest has strained water supplies, it's that a steady rate of water irrigation for cash crop agriculture has met a steady decline in Colorado River flows due to climate change. Human settlement basically doesn't matter!
