I hate to be That Guy, but 47-45 for Bolsonaro is a “hyperventilating into a paper bag” result. PL appears to have over-performed at every level, and with a stacked senate…the ulcer I don’t have is already killing me.

A lot of talk today on how university Presidents so re-upping this thread about how the President of Mexico’s UNAM responded to some local students getting beaten by cops on his campus.
When students were attacked by cops in the México City protests of 68, UNAM’s Rector - Javier Barros Sierra - stayed silent for fear of jeopardizing university funding.

Just kidding. He ordered all flags to 1/2 mast, led 80,000 down Av. Insurgentes, & gave an epic speech defending free expression

The move, affecting about one-fifth of the National Science Foundation’s primary research budget, is the latest sign of how the White House is asserting more control over grants.

If we Nick Saban had to fill out travel reimbursement forms after “creating value for the university” he would lose his fucking mind.
This morning on ESPN's First Take, Nick Saban argued player and coach pay are "totally different markets."

"That's like asking me 'Does a student's scholarship equal the professor's pay?' I mean, how much value does a coach create for a university?" 📺 💰️

"For a generation, people learning how to address global warming were taught the ideas in the “Wedges” paper by Princeton's Socolow & Pacala.
"What they didn’t learn was: “Wedges” was significantly shaped by oil giant BP—one of the single global entities most responsible for causing climate change."
How BP Execs Influenced a Climate Study That Shaped a Generation of Global Policy
BP sponsored an elite Princeton research center to address the climate problem without getting off fossil fuels. Its key work, a paper known as “Wedges,” guided climate discourse for a generation.

Vought's goals are a) to reduce scientific funding generally, and b) especially to universities. Political appointees within agencies can already block spending. This would centralize this power in the White House. By requiring unanimity, it would ensure far less money will be spent on science.

This is a VERY significant decision, given the impact of the rule change, which was set to upend the student visa process which has been in place for the last half-century.

Colleges and universities said the rule would impose millions in costs and cause a big drop in enrollment.

This is nuclear. I don’t think any of my i ternational students *didn’t* go OPT after graduation. This is a very clever way to decimate US science AND higher ed simultanously.
This will devastate our research+innovation capacity, bedrock of the 21st century economy.
