letterboxd post: This was the most enthralling, mesmerizing, visceral thing I have seen at the theaters since Zone of Interest. The only other comparison I can think of right now is Apocalypse Now. It's not just Pattinson, but Pattinson is a big part of it. Merritt Wever matches him beat for beat. I am stunned. I left the theater in a daze.

There are often lists of the great living male movie stars: De Niro, Nicholson and Pacino, usually. How often do you see the name of Nicolas Cage? He should always be up there. He's daring and fearless in his choice of roles, and unafraid to crawl out on a limb, saw it off and remain suspended in air. No one else can project inner trembling so effectively. Recall the opening scenes in "Leaving Las Vegas." See him in Scorsese's "Bringing Out the Dead." Think of the title character in "The Weather Man." Watch him melting down in "Adaptation." And then remember that he can also do a parachuting Elvis impersonator ("Honeymoon in Vegas"), a wild rock 'n' roller ("Wild at Heart"), a lovesick one-handed baker ("Moonstruck"), a straight-arrow Secret Service agent ("Guarding Tess") and on and on. He always seems so earnest. However improbable his character, he never winks at the audience. He is committed to the character with every atom and plays him as if he were him. His success in making Charlie Kaufman a neurotic mess and Donald Kaufman a carefree success story, in the same movie, comes largely from this gift. There are slight cosmetic differences between the two: Charlie usually needs a shave, Donald has a little more hair. But the real reason we can tell the twins apart, even when they're in the same trick shot, comes from within: Cage can tell them apart. He is always Charlie when he plays Charlie, always Donald when he plays Donald. Look and see.

Lots of good polling for Democrats right now. Keep in mind, however, that polling in the last few cycles has been significantly off (~4 points in big races), generally to the benefit of Republicans.

My sense is that this is because voting for Trump drives shame. So respondents simply lie.

Just got info from the Jamie Davis (Louisiana US Dem candidate) campaign that a poll taken from 9/17 to 9/19 shows he's within 4 points of US Rep. Julia Letlow (the R senate candidate) in the Louisiana US senate race.

Of note, Letlow's name recognition is double that of Davis. (82% vs. 41%)

Take one state Senate contest in a Midwestern swing district, a suburban area around a major city full of the sort of middle-class, educated, professional voters that used to be the GOP's base: Private polling shared with me on the condition that I not reveal the specific race found that Trump's favorability rating in this district is a net minus-33 points. Multiple statewide elected Republicans are also underwater in this district, but at a margin of closer to minus-20 points. Meanwhile, the Republican state Senate candidate, a well-known figure in the district with an identity independent of the national party, actually has a positive net favorability rating of 8 points. But the weight of Trump and the party's unpopularity is putting what should be a winnable race for the GOP in jeopardy, which is why this particular campaign is focusing its ads on keeping property taxes low, an issue entirely separate from Trump, Washington, the Iran war, high gas prices, and tariffs.
