I'm thrilled to share my first foray into nature writing.

I describe my travels through Aotearoa New Zealand to see the country's rarest birds—and use this as a vehicle to tell the stories of the islands' evolutionary history and the bold conservation efforts that saved these creatures.

IPA tasting!

Right? Thought of you guys immediately!

I was, dear reader, sorely disappointed to discover that this is something about bioinformatics.

These photos are all taken with a Nikon Z9 + Nikkor 800mm PF.

But TBH the lens was much too long for Aotearoa's tight, dark forests. My Nikkor 300mm f/4 would have been a better lens for most of what I've posted.

Thank you so much, Kat! I'm honored that you read and enjoyed the piece. It was a very emotionally powerful three weeks for me and I wanted to try to express some of the wonder and hope and gratitude that I felt.

And a few more...

Bloomberg allowed me to illustrate the article with my own photographs, which was a thrill for me.

Here a few that didn't make the cut.

Sure, let's monitor product safety using a system that is explicitly not designed for information retrieval.

Why the actual fuck would anyone do this?

Chatgpt 5 gave me exactly wrong advice for how to work around a torn brachioradialis.

“Would you like more information about nephrologists in your area?”

Congratulations Eiko!!

“You’re right, I should’ve said 5 g of creatine, not 5 oz. I’m sorry your kidneys are failing. That must be uncomfortable. I promise I will do better next time.”

That’s perfect

Underbite fish is not amused by your bullshit.

We haven't done anything like this yet but it's worth thinking about.
