Justice Jackson wrote a 20-page concurrence in the recent birthright citizenship case that eloquently defends the history of the 14th amendment and shames those justices who try to erase that history. Over 150 years later, it still stands.
Today marks 158 years since the 14th Amendment was ratified. On this anniversary, we are reminded that our citizenship has never been something granted freely or easily; these rights were won through struggle, sacrifice, and collective action.

SCOTUS ruled 6–3 in Trump v. Barbara that the 14th Amend protects birthright citizenship. A president cannot end it by executive order. Jus. Jackson's concurrence is worth the read as she essentially schools Jus. Thomas on the history of the 14th Amend.

The explanation is racism.
"The Court’s behavior in the Louisiana and Alabama cases over the past six weeks can’t be reconciled with or explained by any coherent understanding of what Purcell supposedly stands for. ... The overall pattern reveals justices behaving in a way that has no obvious explanation other than politics."
231. The Death of Purcell's "Principle"
There is no coherent defense of the "Purcell principle" that can be rationalized with the Supreme Court's recent behavior in the AL and LA redistricting cases.

Victory in Virginia! 🎉

For years, election officials rejected student voter registration applications over missing details like a dorm room number.

Today, a federal judge put a stop to those rejections.

Democracy works best when eligible voters can register and cast a ballot without barriers.
In recent years, officials across Virginia have been rejecting large numbers of student voter registration applications that omit unnecessary details like a dorm room number.

Today, in a significant victory for Virginia college students, a federal judge halted those rejections.

@erin.advancementproject.org tells us how @washingtonpost.com gets the story wrong on DC's occupation.
Thread--> The @washingtonpost.com missed the mark on this piece about the DC occuaption. The study cited board confirms that the deployment of federal forces did not reduce violent harm, yet it also makes the case for more policing based on the reduction of “property crime” --> WRONG!
Opinion | Lessons from Trump’s National Guard experiment
The deployment reduced property crimes, but smarter policing was also crucial.

Cause Flock cameras ARE trash so this seems appropriate. Flock cameras perpetuate police violence, surveillance and are riddled with security breaches. The amount of money communities spend on these weapons of mass surveillance could be used to actually serve the communities.
The city of Dayton, Ohio has covered its Flock cameras with black trash bags in part because police are unsure whether the cameras are still active and the city also doesn’t seem to know whether it is allowed to take the cameras down. @jasonkoebler.bsky.social reports www.404media.co/cities-are-c...
