LA Memorial Coliseum is one of most sustainable stadiums in US with award-winning record of keeping game-day waste out of landfill

Yet century-old venue faces new challenges as climate change rewrites rules of sport

The open-air bowl of the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum has long been the backdrop to breath-taking athletic performances. Behind the scenes, it is also one of the most sustainable stadiums in the US, with an award-winning record of keeping game-day waste out of landfill. But the century-old venue faces new challenges as climate change rewrites the rules of sport.

Matthew Buswell finds he needs to hose down the LA Memorial Coliseum's 75,000 seats more often than the schedule used to require.

“Why would I have to do a wash down in January? I had to because we looked like a chimney,” he says referring to LA's 2025 fires.

Fantastic reporting here by Libby Rainey that confirms what we've been hearing about the "clean zones" around LA28 venues: "Carter Hewgley, chief strategy officer for L.A. County’s Department of Homeless Services and Housing, said his office had been told to plan for perimeters as wide as a mile"
The LA Olympics is expected to displace unhoused people living around venues. So what's the plan?
L.A. officials say people living on the streets will likely have to leave certain areas come 2028. They don't know how they'll be moved or who will pay for it.

LA’s bold vision for a “car-free” Olympics has settled into a more achievable “transit-first”, still a remarkable feat for a city built around the automobile. The 2028 Olympic Games could leave behind a legacy of cleaner air, a greener bus fleet, and better bus shelters, yet slow planning and a lack of money have quashed the most ambitious plans, while car travel remains convenient and negative perceptions of public transport abound. How far Los Angeles gets matters well beyond sporting events.

Scientists had warned us. Climate change doesn't just hurt nature, it also hurts capital.

You can continue to deny it or ignore acting on it, only if you can afford to pay for the growing damages.
