I'm close to finishing a new project!
Taking a wild punt into unexplored territory, I've made a hybrid of solo journaling game and narrative wargame.
This being me, it involves intoxicants, zombies, and nuns.

So allow me to introduce In The Scarlet Cloister.

if any part of this looks even a little bit interesting*, I guarantee it will be worth your time to check out

*(if none of it looks even a little bit interesting, does your mind have no tastebuds? because it sure looks interesting to me.)

what the fuck was going on that they felt they needed to preemptively ban submissions seemingly written by Bede the Venerable?
sometimes i feel like a hack and a fraud but then I remember that The Horror Zine was a real publication that didn't pay and... no maybe I'm doing OK actually

here's my blistering hot take: if you make a generic "fail / mixed success / full success" catch-all move in a PbtA game, you have failed.
Moves are specific. They have specific triggers and specific outcomes.

yoooo this looks *sick*
Hey everyone! I'm so excited to announce this! If you like the D&D 'walkthrough maps' I've done over the years, I'm proud to present my new book... DUNGEONS! ILLUSTRATED MAPS OF CLASSIC DUNGEONS & DRAGONS ADVENTURES, coming from Ten Speed Press on April 27, 2027!

almost any ttrpg bugbear - dice fudging, railroading, murderhobo behaviour, rules lawyering, ignoring the rules, metagaming, coffeeshop play, etc etc - can be a positive thing if the entire playgroup has bought into it and the game in question can support it mechanically.
Hit me with your nuanced ttrpg take.

hard agree
world of darkness has always been an Urban Fantasy setting.
Vampire and Werewolf are also not horror games

I would rather have a small scene with consistently invested, engaged participants than a much large scene with a significant amount of people only engaging on a casual shallow level.
I think this is linked to the idea that the mainstreaming of TTRPGs is a good thing and that more people in the hobby is a de facto goal. Neither of which I think actually has much evidence for being true.
Is there any other artform that's as obsessed with onboarding as ttrpgs?

i genuinely think that a serious ideological split between the conservative right and the reactionary bigoted right has been a long time coming and we are now finally starting to see the cracks form.
Jacob Rees-Mogg, the most stereotypically Tory conservative man of the 21st Century, responded to Suella Braverman with a long-form video criticizing her position and rejecting a race-based theory of Englishness, and in response has been ratioed by the increasingly feral British online far-right.

i gotta say i will take powerscalers over shippers any day because at least the powerscalers ground their vicious infighting in the actual facts of the text discussed

I think there's a distinction to be made between:
- the complexity of a game's rules
and
- how tightly a game expects you to follow its rules.
they're different axes.
It's funny bc I think "PbtA is rules light" is a myth from people who only played 5E or 90s descended games before encountering it.
Personally I find "rules light" games are much more difficult to roleplay with and consequently make actual play with.

I do not consider the pbta games I've done actual play in to be rules light. If I'm playing a pbta game a goal is to use as many of the mechanics on my character sheet as possible

to my understanding "punk" is when you are not very good at playing rock music and all the discussions about 'real punk' beyond beyond that is just sophistry

So far across 2 groups I’ve heard:

-Pears

all jokes aside i do think that in order to actually count as OSR you ought to be able to run Expedition To The Barrier Peaks in it with minimal conversion work.
guy who hates osr but only because "they are disrespectful of gygaxian design rigor"

while it is about many things, Dark Sun is kinda fundamentally *about* climate change. if the shiny new book isn't about climate change, it's not really Dark Sun, it's just DnD wearing it's skin like a suit.

so how much do you reckon the mcdm guy paid to have that OSR video made, eh?
