Nature’s tiniest nests 🪺🍄

Bird’s nest fungi growing on a mossy log. The “eggs” are actually spore packets called peridioles. When a raindrop hits just right, it launches them out like tiny splash-cups so they can start new colonies.

Seafloor snacking at its spiniest 🦀

This decadent decapod, Paralithodes sp., is also known as a king crab. Spiny king crabs crawl across the seafloor in search of their next meal, which could be other crabs, sea stars, dead animals, or organic material that sank from the surface waters above.

Proof that there's more than one way to squid 🦑

The octopus squid (Octopoteuthis deletron) is unique among squids. Most squids have eight arms and two long tentacles, making a total of 10 appendages. But as these squid mature, their two feeding tentacles are reabsorbed into their bodies.

Fossilized Goniatite shells, spiraling throughout this piece of shale concretion. Each one a, stone imprint of a tiny life, lived out in a tropical sea over 300 million years ago.

Millions of years ago during the Silurian period, the Sahara Desert was a shallow sea full of aquatic animals like crinoids. Don’t be fooled! Crinoids are commonly called "sea lilies" but they aren't plants! They are echinoderms, like starfish and sea urchins, and many species are still alive today!
