KeNHA seems to be doubling down on a very car-centric mode of infrastructure planning for Nairobi.

I miss the days when the agency took a more holistic approach, which led to the BRT-ready designs for the James Gichuru-Uthiru stretch.

Returning to Nairobi after a year and a half, it saddens me to see how much the walking environment has deteriorated: broken pavements, streets without lighting, and overflowing drainage. City residents deserve better.

We often hear that Addis Ababa is too hilly for cycling, but we're already seeing ridership along the stretch from Arat Kilo to Shiromeda, one of the steeper corridors in the city.

Local trips account for a third of urban highway traffic in the Netherlands. The highway authority paid for cycle infrastructure on city streets to reduce congestion on the motorway network.

The Kebena River greenway in Addis Ababa.

The sand pit near Comoros Street is a hit with kids, and you have to take your shoes off before entering to keep it clean.

For years the line has been that BRT is too hard to implement in Kigali because it would require land acquisition, but we seem to have a double standard when it comes to building wider roads and interchanges for cars.

Footpath and cycle track construction is underway along the busy A2 corridor through Debre Birhan, 🇪🇹.

The stretch through downtown to the east also needs an upgrade. The redesign will work best if it redistributes traffic onto parallel streets to free up space for walking.

Here's the new bidirectional cycle track along the A1 corridor in Adama, Ethiopia.

It was great to see that the city preserved many of the existing trees when upgrading the corridor.

Adama, Ethiopia, has done a wonderful job of greening city streets and providing a network of shaded walkways.

More cities should make trees an integral part of urban street infrastructure.

Antananarivo's USD 170m cable car system is lying idle.

Would it have made more sense to invest the funds in public transport industry reform, bus fleet expansion, and BRT instead?

One of the nice features of the Addis Ababa public transport system is that the stages have priority queues for pregnant people and caregivers with small children.

(Granted, we need a proper bus and BRT system to reduce the waiting times in the first place.)
