This is a nature photo I took of a hummingbird hawk-moth resting on a lavender princess rhododendron. The moth is facing away with wings fully extended, catching light like stained glass. Antennas are held in a V-pattern, their serrated edges visible. A moss green patch of fuzz trails down its back. Velvety umber bands circle the abdomen. The tail ends in a splay of dark plumes. Lavender-pink blooms beneath the moth blur into the green background bokeh. I can hear colors, see music, smell emotions, and taste words. This cross-sensory perception is called synesthesia. I was born this way. It took me a long time to realize this condition made me different. And trust me, being different isn’t something most of us want to be. It’s very isolating, especially when extreme pain comes with it. As a child, I described these sensations and people either thought I was trying to be funny, or because I was artistic, I had an overactive imagination. Sometimes I laughed along, finding joy in their amusement, but it also chipped away at my truth. You’d think this would give me an advantage with sense-switching in haiku or senryu. It does not. The cross-sensory that I experience is hard for most people to follow; the leap is too far. When I sense switch in poetry, I have to make-believe that I don’t have synesthesia for it to make sense. The only way I can express my condition through poetry (that isn’t abstract) is to strip sensations down to their bare bones. It's really disappointing that what SCOTUS did to voting rights—to mostly BLACK people—is being treated as a non-emergency, just like when they started banning books by Black authors and killing African American Studies classes and programs in universities.

‘Whispers of Nature’ First International Haiku Contest 2026 Haiku Association of Sri Lanka Honourable Mention beach day baby’ s first prints return to sea Tré – USA Ravi Kiran's commentary: The crux of this haiku is the second line. Different babies take differently to their first visit to a beach. Some get very excited and others get petrified. Once the feeling settles, babies instinctively explore and are amazed at how they can leave footprints in the wet sands. The last line captures the cyclic nature of life.
