Nice wader action at Scaling Dam past couple of days with ruff, dunlin, redshank, & common sandpiper all showing well in front of hide. Two meadow pipits today also nice to see, a challenge to initially pick out until they moved. @teesbirds.bsky.social @nybirdnews.bsky.social

Scaling Dam this eve. Buff-breasted sandpiper on far bank, greenshank, ruff, & whitethroat a little closer. Clouded yellow butterfly outside hide a real thrill to see as it's my first - was too fast for a photo alas. @teesbirds.bsky.social @nybirdnews.bsky.social

Golden plover at Margrove this evening. Very rare to see one there, possibly even rarer - I'm no expert at all but this bird seems to be showing traits of Pacific golden plover with its incredibly long legs & coarsely notched tail. Would value opinions. @teesbirds.bsky.social @nybirdnews.bsky.social

Little grebe, 2 x common snipe, & common sandpiper at Margrove this afternoon. Distant, but nice to see nevertheless. @teesbirds.bsky.social @nybirdnews.bsky.social

Chinese character moth in kitchen last night. Though common & widespread it's actually the first I've ever seen. Famous for resting on branches & looking like a bird dropping so as to avoid predation. Remarkably beautiful up close. @teesbirds.bsky.social @nybirdnews.bsky.social

Terrible photos but thrilled to see a goshawk heading inland at Easington this afternoon. Brute of a bird, even from a distance. Many thanks to those who helped clinch ID, much appreciated. @teesbirds.bsky.social @nybirdnews.bsky.social

Big mis-ID moment yesterday with this wood sandpiper at Margrove that I had down as a green sandpiper. Many thanks to everyone for the gentle corrections - birders showing fine form by being so kind about it. @teesbirds.bsky.social @nybirdnews.bsky.social

Not a trio I ever expected to get in the same frame - greenfinch, linnet, & little ringed plover at Scaling Dam this afternoon. Shame the sun went behind a cloud just as this shot happened. @teesbirds.bsky.social @nybirdnews.bsky.social

Best views yet of a green sandpiper at Margrove today - wasn't phased by my presence at all. Nice to see up close as it pottered about feeding. Common sandpiper also present but distant. @teesbirds.bsky.social @nybirdnews.bsky.social

5 x common snipe enjoying the rain at Margrove this afternoon, plus one I'm not at all sure about - looking at tail feathers I'd hazard a wild guess at juv reed bunting but happy to be corrected. @teesbirds.bsky.social @nybirdnews.bsky.social

Thought I'd hit patch gold with a little gull at Margrove this afternoon when I first saw this dinky bird. Closer views showed it to be a very small juv black-headed gull. Brief excitement fun though. LBBG beside me & fresh painted lady nice to see. @teesbirds.bsky.social @nybirdnews.bsky.social

Distant black-tailed godwit at Scaling Dam this afternoon - threw me for a while until I got a wing flap & clearly saw white underwing & wing bar. Adjacent whimbrel nice to see also. @teesbirds.bsky.social @nybirdnews.bsky.social

Best I could manage of the sleepy smew on a very quick visit to Saltholme yesterday. Huge thanks to Carolyn for kind help in locating it. Then home to find a rather lovely Pellucid hoverfly 'Volucella pellucens' on the garden brambles. @teesbirds.bsky.social @nybirdnews.bsky.social

Distant sandpiper at Margrove this afternoon. Not 100% with ID but leaning very much towards green. Nice to see after what's been a quiet spring & early summer. @teesbirds.bsky.social @nybirdnews.bsky.social
