October is Suicide Prevention Month. Stats from Everytown for Gun Safety:

"Most people who die from suicide use a gun. In fact, six out of every ten gun deaths in the United States are from suicide, totaling nearly 27,000 deaths in the U.S. every year."

Hope Dems propose an assault rifle ban.

I am really looking forward to this movie, which opens Nov. 6, about the life of Jimmy Stewart - how when he returned from fighting in WWII, he was at a low point in his life, and making "It's a Wonderful Life," really did save him.

Reading today's NYT headlines - from an FBI breach by hackers to dozens killed in Myanmar airstrikes, from the Cornell sexual assault case to ICE hiring 5000 more agents, and from $6 diesel fuel to unheeded employee warnings about AI - one might think we're all going to hell in a handcart.

Such a good column, reminding us how far this administration has deviated from the intent of the Constitution.

I'm reading this new book by Sarah Longwell, founder of The Bulwark, on the ways in which Republicans have been successful in reaching millions, and the ways in which Democrats have not. Her findings are based on thousands of interviews with voters of all stripes. Very smart, very enlightening.

Trump's Board of Peace has a plan to rebuild Gaza. This is their estimate of the damage done. "The plan estimates physical damage in Gaza at $35.2 billion and says full recovery and reconstruction will require about $71.4 billion over the next decade."

I just watched the "60 Minutes" story abt. "pardon brokers" one can hire for a fee ($300k to $3M) to get a pardon request in front of Pres. Trump. Some 90+% of the pardons Trump has granted were done that way & not thru reg. channels where one can request a pardon for the price of a postage stamp.

I'm reading "The Only Plane in the Sky," an oral history of 9/11, by Garrett Graff. It is riveting. The events of the day are told by World Trade Center workers, fire fighters, air traffic controllers, the military who scrambled jets to intercept Flight 93, and more. A really good read.

How did Repubs think this would all play out when they let Trump tear down the East Wing, threaten to tear down the Kennedy Center, violently round up & detain thousands of immigrants & non-immigrants, take us to war, trample our Constitutional rights & more. Did they think this was a winning plank?
