It was originally much harder to beat the game, apparently. But all the talk and concern around the time system: it undermined the studio's confidence
The Blood of Dawnwalker's divisive time mechanic was once much stricter, but it was loosened because of "fear" around the game www.eurogamer.net/the-blood-of...

Everyone's talking about the cuts to the studios and dev, which, yes, absolutely.

But the behind the scenes cuts to areas like business planning, forecasting, demand planning... these aren't cuts a serious business makes, imo.

Nighthawks is doing... well!

It came close to beating our "First Day Of Launch" record. This is a remarkable achievement when you consider that this is on TOP of the thousands of Kickstarter backers who already own the game.

So I think we can safely put this in the "success" column for now! Phew!

The numbers confuse me. 1600 Xbox jobs were cut in July with 1600 more to follow over the course of a year. 268 further job cuts have been made. So we're up to 1868?

But Matt Booty says MS is "roughly three-quarters of the way through previously announced restructuring".

Does that mean...

Reminded this morning of the time I went to meet presumed cranky Witcher author Andrzej Sapkowski who was promoting a new book at the time. He turned out not to be cranky at all, but full of laughter and cheekiness, despite what this photo suggests! www.eurogamer.net/meeting-andr...

Wolverine's characterisation is a bright spot in this otherwise underwhelming, old-school romp that reminds us how far action games have come.

Was quite surprised to learn this game sold 2m copies. There's still the not insignificant hurdle of 1666: Amsterdam to clear before this, mind you

If anyone wants to read something with the same premise (adult dark wizards fucked up the world) and the same props (magic, teens, chosen one, wizard school...) but written by someone with a heart and a brain, I can't recommend The Scholomance enough.
As a new Harry Potter trailer makes the rounds, it bears repeating that there’s no way to watch this show without supporting J.K. Rowling’s bigotry and the structural violence she’s inflicting on the trans community.
There is no ethical consumption of HBO’s Harry Potter series

This essay by fighting game dev Patrick Miller starts as a response to drama (don't ask) but then drops truth after truth about escapism, coping mechanisms, and games as a painkiller.

"If games serve a load-bearing function in someone's life, it's the life that needs fixing, not the games."
"On opiates"

I have been thinking a lot over the years about the unhealthy roles games play in people's lives, and the last week got me to finally put together this post on the kind of work I am doing (and not doing) going forward. I am here to heal and strengthen.

It's interesting seeing the continued pushback to the limited time idea the game has. I understand the concern but it really isn't as stressful or limiting as it seems. But some people don't even want to entertain the idea at all - it's like a hard block. It's a cool feature!
