Why is the public confused about wealth taxes and climate change? Because for 40+ years, lobby groups and think tanks have been paid to confuse them. And it started with Thatcher pulling off one of the greatest financial cons in modern history. 🧵

We have all been gaslit by the lobbyists, the "merchants of doubt", whose while raisin d'etre is to sow uncertainty in the publicind about things that would otherwise be easy, evidence based arguments to make.

"If you can do ‘tobacco’ you can do just about anything in public relations” says Robert Kenner’s “Merchants of Doubt”

Kenner shows how secretly funded think tanks have perverted public policy & created confusion over major issues from gun control to climate change.

A divided 🇬🇧 within the 🇪🇺 or a divided 🇬🇧 out of the 🇪🇺
Let me just think about that for a moment…

Before AI deepfakes, I distinctly remember Michael Gove’s daughter posting a TikTok of him asleep on the sofa while she mimed vomiting at the camera. Her old TikToks did exist and were later wiped. If only someone had saved that one.

Andy Burnham has done in 10 weeks what Keir Starmer failed to do in two years: use a huge majority to push a bold agenda aimed at reconnecting with large parts of the electorate. Naturally, the right will attack it, but what’s the point of a massive majority if you’re afraid to use it?

Gove’s cynical and performative media rehabilitation strategy is vomit inducing.
It’s a pity that #r4today don’t remind him of his Ian Hislop ‘HIGNFY’ roasting.

I suspect it’s focus groups suggesting we do away with the triple lock. Knowing a few in that likely consulted demographic, I suspect they don’t think contributing to a personal pension is worth it either. That’s the paradox of populism: unintended consequences. Careful what you vote for.

I once innocently blew a police armed-robbery surveillance because my car matched the reported getaway car make (not the colour). The scramble to CYA was rather impressive & initially I got blamed. That was a local & costly op. Fairford may have cost more. Now watch the blame find someone. #r4today

The Chagos deal: negotiated largely by Mr Sunak’s Conservative government which conducted 11 rounds of negotiations versus Labour’s two before the October 2024 political agreement. Mauritius would obtain sovereignty while the UK retained control to operate Diego Garcia for 99 years.

I haven’t verified whether this is AI, but if genuine, seeing disabled men and elderly women physically attacking someone for holding opposing views is deeply concerning. History (1930s Germany) reminds us how quickly intolerance of opposing views can become normalised by ordinary citizens. #r4today

Multiple men violently assault a female protester at Reform's conference at the Birmingham NEC, to the visible delight of Nigel Farage.
September 5, 2026 at 7:45 AM
I listened to Farage’s speech live yesterday. Mostly laughable hot air until the “first 100 days”. Then came an ominously familiar 1930s authoritarian playbook to weaken Parliament, purge the Civil Service, neuter the judiciary, then use a plebiscite to legitimise the new order.

Half of Reform left the Tories because they were tired of being associated with a bunch of serially corrupt incompetents.

The other half were kicked out because they WERE the serially corrupt incompetents.
