I think it's worth engaging a bit with this famous incident. Particularly the claim that it gave U.S. fighter pilots a significant "advantage". John Lundstrom includes an appendix in _The First Team and the Guadalcanal Campaign_ on this claim and casts significant doubt over its validity.
#OTD in 1942, a Mitsubishi A6M Zero crash-landed on Akutan Island in Alaska. The U.S. Navy later recovered and repaired the Zero so that it's handling characteristics could be analyzed. The information gave U.S. fighter pilots an advantage over their Japanese adversaries.
