Kicking off my Monday of a week without driving by taking the bus to a meeting in Durham. Follow along. I start out with breakfast at Weaver st, which has an NS bus stop just across the street so I can see my bus while I’m waiting. #weekwithoutdriving

@tkingfisher.com excuse me… Project Gutenberg _what_ now??
That time she broke into my house and glued erotic treebeard illustrations to all my windows FACING OUTWARD.

That time she hacked project gutenburg so the edition of "wuthering heights" on there has Garfield instead of Heathcliff and there's a scene where he fucks a lasagna.

What everyone has to prepare for is the constitutional crisis to accelerate if the Democrats take the House and the Senate. Vought has been allowed by the Republicans to act with impunity, so have he will continue to ignore Congress. This is why you have to impeach him immediately.
Killed. NSF’s SBE was killed, in violation of law. The President does not have the power to choose to kill programs at a whim by defunding them. The imperial presidency was a mistake and we are in a separation of powers constitutional crisis.
The fiscal year is over.

The dying Social, Behavioral, and Economic division of NSF ended up awarding 90 total grants this year, as opposed to ~700-800 in recent past years.

This what Garfield Benjamin called “squeeveillance” in his excellent piece on cuteness and surveillance in Surveillance & Society from 2024:

That's where I've been for a while. We can't even reach questions about the death penalty itself because we fail essential predicates such as "fair and consistent criminal justice system" and "reliable death penalty verdicts that leave no reasonable doubt" and, as shown tonight, "humane execution."

The idea that you can make restitution to the family of a murder victim by murdering the murderer because society somehow owes the bereaved another death, is, frankly, sick

Thinking of folks in TN and popping in here to remind y’all that Capital Punishment is a dressed-up way of saying Premeditated Murder. Every defense of execution by the state falls apart when subjected to even a modicum of scrutiny.

Once you realize Trump's morally binding AI code doesn't even spell "United States" properly, the whole sham looks even more ominous.

The gaps between job roles, job descriptions, and the work people actually do is pretty vast.

I don’t mean the work that the procurement person who hires vendors does. I mean the work that people do across orgs.

I research teachers' work. There is a known gap between public perception and the actual day-to-day experience of teaching that sociologist Dan Lortie poetically described as coming from "the apprenticeship of observation."

This imagination/reality gap creates lots of problems in ed policy.
I suspect there is a lot of extrapolation from one’s own work experience to other domains being trafficked in the concept of “white collar” and “professional services” and to a lesser extent in “productivity”.

I attended a session last week where over 150 people were learning about election defense. A friend who has been organizing for months invited me. I was curious so I went. It struck me again how bifurcated so much about our current moment is. So much happening that you miss unless u pay attention.

A thing I learned about Meta when I was trying to understand how their statements relate to their actions a few years ago is that *they just tell absolutely indefensible lies* and journalists almost always let them. They believed no one would ever punish them for it in any way that matters.
Most state attorneys general released Meta from Cambridge Analytica-related claims as part of the child safety settlement. New Mexico wasn't part of that deal, and a jury there just found 26 of 29 past claims about Cambridge Analytica, hate speech and misinformation willfully deceptive.
Eight Years On, Cambridge Analytica Scandal Catches Up With Meta in Santa Fe
A jury found that Meta—then Facebook—misled the public in statements about Cambridge Analytica and its policies on hate speech, violence and misinformation.

I tried this Signal registration w/ no phone number option

1) it was easy
2) it requires $2.99 payment to reduce scams, you can pay w/ a Google Gift Card (that you can buy in cash)

if you took every other precaution (fresh phone/google account/delete logs, wifi only) that's close to a real burner
New Signal update for Android (8.28) 🎉

- Signal Login: optional registration method allowing users to create a Signal account without providing a phone number
- Improved sticker pack management

Today I saw the new 4 hour documentary Musk, directed by Alex Gibney. There were too many times to count that a sold out theater burst out laughing at Elon Musk, something he said or did, even sometimes just how he looked. I believe that is his worst nightmare come to life.

Meta's platforms have repeatedly been caught running ads for deepfake "nudify" apps that let you virtually undress real people without their consent, but they won't run an a trailer for an upcoming documentary that reflects poorly on Elon Musk. www.hollywoodreporter.com/business/dig...

YouTube, TikTok and Meta have all turned down the trailer for the Oct. 9 doc, citing “political” content. X won't even take Bleecker Street's calls. The distributor is appealing.
