An occasional navalist, maritime geek and national security gadfly. Paying attention to overlooked things.
One of the cooler things about the WWII Navy was that the senior leadership committed to bringing younger officers up and giving them their shot!

Well it seems like the rollout of the SMART AI Air Traffic Control Tool for Washington DC’s aerospace is just fucking over every DC flyer today. Well done. Shut it down.

OPINION: Andy Harris silent as seabed mining comes to Eastern Shore
For the last 20 years, my work has focused on understanding the impacts of seabed mining on ocean health. For most of my career, that work has occurred far away

Remember my epic thread of films I nominated to the Library of Congress's National Film Registry last summer?

I'm making another one! This time more abbreviated: 25 posts, featuring two films per day, one pulled from last year's list and one I didn't nominated last year (or, in many cases, ever).
August 15 is the deadline to submit nominations to the Library of Congress’s National Film Registry. I don’t know who will be making the selections this time around but I’ll be submitting as if it were Carla Hayden, the Librarian of Congress controversially fired in May. www.loc.gov/programs/nat...

People think Silicon Valley is named that because of the programmers.

No they fucking built them there. They turned one of the factories into a Fry's Electronics store. Intel got workplace poisoning complaints there.
I bought a TV there. I bought a TV where they built Intel silicon.

Discovered that we have a family of at least six red foxes in our backyard, and the kits are in the happy-go-lucky, bound out from the underbrush, ask ”who are you?” and then disappear again phase of life.

Ukraine is showing us that big maritime industrial base investments within 100 miles of the border are at a real risk. America needs to move big Navy assets away from San Diego and elsewhere. Here’s why:

FPV Drones pose a real risk to all military facilities within 100 miles of the U.S. border. It is time to pull big U.S. Navy investments back to safer areas.

Feels like somebody didn’t take a call from someone somewhere.
Trump is currently calling and texting every single Israeli reporter on his speed dial (and there are quite a few) to tell them he’s not going to let Netanyahu retaliate. He’s not leaving any room for error here.
Again, I doubt Israeli actions were a surprise to DC given degree of mil to mil cooperation and coordination. But Trump very clearly looking to shut it down.
