Nobody's going to vote to reduce their own consumption. Fact. Therefore, climate Maoism.
This interview is making the rounds:

"Global ecological #collapse is inevitable. That’s a fact. & the response — oh no, don’t say that, bc acknowledging how bad things look might lead people to think stuff we don’t want them to think — that seems crazy & very much like infantilising people to me."
How do we build social movements in an age of collapse? An interview with activist Tadzio Müller
Honestly, it was also very difficult to create a climate movement in Germany. We worked for five years with hardly any attention. Then the Paris summit happened, and we exploded.

Since we’re doing another round of “AI will destroy humanity” doom-hype, it’s a good time to announce a new paper myself and my postdoc advisor just had accepted by BioSocieties on just this. TL;DR: almost all the “AI can make bioweapons” literature comes ultimately from the Effective Altruists.

I've been here before, but it never ceases to amaze me: Hampshire College is itself a private, liberal arts college whose published cost of attendance is $60k a year. $60k a year! That's only a little less than my pre-tax annual salary!

God I hate being right.
The Heritage Foundation laid out how they were going to rescind Title IX, the law that prohibits sex discrimination in education, by first targeting trans people's participation in sport. Capitulating on the human rights of transgender people is catastrophically falling at the first hurdle.
a lot of people act like there's a trade being offered where we give up trans athletes in sports and in exchange fascism is defeated forever

No, this is a fridge, which, with the addition of a human skull and a set of scales laden with florins and guilders, might remind the idle snacker that amid the shady boughs of Nature's bounty gleams Temptation like a baleful lure to bring all Men to their ultimate and eternal Ruin.

What I'm saying here is that as well as all the other collateral damage inflicted by AI uptake, there is the raw fact that it is an unsolvable privacy and security nightmare.
'The honest conclusion is the one you're driving at: verification of "no training" has to come from either owning the computation or a cryptographic proof about it, and if neither is available you're buying a contract, not a guarantee.'

“Interesting” re Italy’s RepowerEU funds spent (as of end 2025) 👇
And what about M7, ie RepowerEU funds rearranged after Russia's energy crisis and *explicitly designed to accelerate the green transition*?

Well, of the €2.5bn registered at project level up to 2025, most went to gas (€420m).

Renewables lagged behind. Only double the size of H2 investments.

Anyhow, this is what my green growth steelman looks like.
Green growth doesn't depend on joules of energy used in production, it only depends on energy's production price. The idea is that 'green' energy becomes cheaper than fossil fuel energy, hence increases in productivity without increases in fossil fuel combustion.

My word, just found a photo of our small yard taken a decade ago today -- shocking, everything is still so green! For the past three years or so the summers have been so much hotter that everything is now brown, burnt almost to a crisp.
