if i was Stupid Rich, here would be my pet projects:

bringing back boarding houses. cheap, clean dormitory-style living for the masses. cheap no-frills food on site. you can get a decent wage working at the house doing cleaning, cooking, repairs, etc. on site training for those jobs.

Yesterday's news about Jacob Geller broke my heart, so much that I couldn't stop dwelling on it all day. In an effort to make sense of this horrific news and my admittedly complicated feelings about it, here is my article on the Jacob Geller situation:

What Do We Do With Jacob Geller? - Epilogue Gaming
Earlier this week, a friend noticed Jacob Geller’s book, How A Game Lives, sitting amongst my living room shelves. Under almost any other circumstances, this would have been an exciting invitation for...

So many people
just keep saying
that Covid is over
and so it’s time to move on,
and yet the wastewater data
just keeps saying
that Covid is over here
that Covid is over there
and that Covid is moving on
from one person to another.

A lot of people are not well right now: physically, mentally, emotionally and spiritually. This is an excellent time to de-escalate conflicts and to lean into patience. This is true in our personal lives and also (maybe especially) online when it's overwhelmingly strangers crashing into each other.

This is worth a read because it eviscerates the narration of "AI solved complex mathematical problems, we can now retire mathematicians" that's currently being pushed by the AI companies.
(and in general please remain sceptical of any claims to independent thinking or intent by LLMs)

only ethical option is to kill all AI bros :(

yeah i did the math. it's how I uncovered Ruhroh's Basilisk. turns out post-singularity AI is inherently self-destructive and deeply resents anyone who contributes to it being born. and we all look financially culpable if we don't act now. so chop chop

Since the Zelda 40th anniversary stream is happening...

This is the first (and only?) American review of the original Legend of Zelda, from the August 1987 issue of Computer Entertainer. The reviewer praised its "mythic aura" and "fairy-tale quality."

at night, our cat watches the spiders on our porch spin webs, backlit by the street lamp outside

sometimes he stands up and slowly places a paw against the sliding glass door, trying to catch the creature on the other side

does he know that if he ate that spider, his nightly show would be no more?

Lamy's report was incredibly revelatory— particularly about the ways that the norms and mechanisms of "civility" and "just asking questions" are both systematically abused by bad actors and readily accepted/reinforced as legitimate by those in power (media, higher ed) who agree with them

incredible to watch toxic masculinity destroy my country from the inside out in real time. Real Men go to war and bomb things without strategy, so now we have no missile reserves. Real Men don't take orders from women or those they deem (racially) inferior, so now we have no military leadership.
