Visual example:

Let's say it's VERY important that your readers notice a key getting stolen by a mouse. You do NOT want your readers to miss this as it plays a huge role in the plot later.

Will some people notice the mouse in the first example? Sure.
But EVERYONE will notice in the second.
Two simple cartoon panels both showing one person worriedly asking "have you seen my key?" and the other responding "no, sorry". In the first panel the characters are framed in the foreground and a mouse carrying a key is a smaller element of the background, off to the side. In the second example, the mouse and key are framed in the foreground from a perspective close to the ground, while the two human characters are in the background.

TEXT: Corner Tangent When two lines meet in a drawing to create a corner, that’s not a problem, but when another line runs into that corner, it creates a corner tangent. (Image demonstrating this) An effective exercise to help you avoid corner and bump-up tangents is to lay out a big grid, and try to draw a character running, jumping, dancing, etc over it without creating any tangents with the grid. (Image demonstrating this) TEXT: Parallel Tangent A parallel tangent is when two lines follow the same direction, and in doing so “trap” one line in the form created by the other, as the dust cloud does here with the character’s head, and the wall with the character’s coat. (image demonstrating this) When lines intersect at too steep an angle, they have a tendency to get clunky and create a thick area at their intersection. a thirty-five degree angle (eyeballed) is about as close as I let two intersecting lines get: (image of two lines intersecting at a thirty-five degree angle) Closer than that, and I simply stop one of the lines short. this helps avoid the clumping you might otherwise see. (image of two lines NEARLY intersecting at a 22 degree angle) TEXT: Cross-panel tangent (Image: two panels butted up against each other; the word balloon in one runs into the tail of a horse in another) Watch to make sure that you don’t have any tangents created by the proximity of lines in two different panels, especially panels without a gutter between them. (Image: two panels: the line of a jaw in the first follows the same axis as a roof in the second, though a gutter separates the line from appearing continuous) Even with a gutter, compositions can be strengthened by making sure that lines on either side of it don’t share the same path. TEXT: Fake Panels (image: a wanted man standing in front of a wall. The line of the wall runs uninterrupted from the top of the panel to the bottom) A line running uninterrupted from one side of a panel to the other (vertically OR horizontally or diagonally) can suggest to the audience that the line is a panel border. (image: same image, but not the elbow breaks the continuity of the wall's line) Ensure clarity by breaking the line with an element in the drawing (like the wanted man’s elbow in the example)

Text: TANGENTS In geometry, a tangent is when a line touches a curve at a single point. (images illustrating this, with a curve and a circle touching the lines) The point where they touch is called the tangent. in a drawing, this is what I call a “bump-up” tangent (more on that later), but the term “tangent” is a bit more flexible when applied to visual art. When an artist (or art critic, or art teacher, etc) mentions a tangent, they’re generally referring to any relationship between lines (or elements) in a drawing that interact in a way that the artist didn’t intend. When I was a teacher, I found it helpful to differentiate the various offenses that fell under the catch-all term “tangents” and give them each a name, to make identification of problem areas in a drawing easier. An earlier version of these examples was published online in 2011 under the title “The Schweizer Guide to Spotting Tangents.” Text: Long-Line Tangent The “long-line” tangent is when the line from one subject in the drawing leads into the line of another. (image where the line from a figure's wide-brimmed hat"becomes" the line of the roof) See how the hat of this fella runs into the line of the roof? that’s bad! (image where they do NOT intersect) Not so bad! Try to avoid near-tangents, too! Even if a line doesn’t actually connect with another, “close” isn’t great, either. (image illustrating this point using the same iconography as above) Text: Bump-Up Tangent A bump-up tangent is when one element of a drawing bumps up against another. (image where the outside a figure's elbow touches a wall) When the bump-up is the result of different subjects touching, correct it by making one clearly overlap the other. (Same image repeated twice, but in one the elbow is in front of the wall, and in the other behind it) Either of these works just fine! Sometimes using the principle of “what’s closer?” overlap won’t always be the best solution. you can do that (like the nose in the example) or you can just redraw the offending lines (like the lapel). Images: a drawing with tangents, and that same drawing with the tangents eliminated Text: Beyond just the drawing itself, make sure to avoid bumping your image against the formal components of the comic: word balloons, sound effects, panel borders, etc. They’re in the image, therefore, regardless of what stage they’re introduced into the art, they’re PART OF THE COMPOSITION, and need to be treated as such. (Image: example drawing where the balloon and panel borders are creating bump-up tangents with the drawing) There are many publishers who insist on live (editable) balloons and dialogue text to make easier foreign sales and online publishing; I vehemently disagree with this approach, because it makes flexible what should be the sole purview of a cartoonist: the intersection of lines in the art, and lines in the art, like it or not, iNCLUDE the lines that surround a word balloon. For this reason, LETTERiNG SHOULD BE DONE BEFORE iNKS. Then your inks can accommodate the balloons. This was standard practice until the advent of digital lettering, and while there’s nothing wrong with digital lettering, its placement in the pipeline order generally results in a poorer overall comic than would be the case were it done between the roughs/pencils stage and the inks.
