The thing about your favorite youtubers is you don't know them. Not really. They're playing a character, and when their real-life behavior doesn't match the character, that's not a reason to downplay the seriousness of their actions. It just means there are sides of them they didn't want you to see.

It honeslty just shows me how much rape culture exists. With James Somerton, we all collectively agreed he didn’t deserve a platform anymore, and he disappeared. I’m sure he’s got some job somewhere, living a life. But an admitted rapist, well, he we must forgive, because some of us liked his stuff.

I do not think Jacob Geller should have a public platform.
Anyone arguing that that means he should be tarred and feathered in the public square is disingenuous. He can live a happy life for all I care.

I think what sucks is that people going "I always had bad vibes" are basically saying "it affects me less" like I'm happy for you but

I really respected his work. I have his book. It was a gift. His work meant a lot to me and so rape allegations hit really hard. I can't separate the two.

the only reason the jacob geller rape case is public record is because the school newspaper sued the university for its mishandling of sexual misconduct. that is why the document that did him in is public record. do you people really think the school newspaper wronged the victim?

like idk man sure i think personal growth is important and stuff but also you can just be a barista. i think if you had really reckoned with the weight of what you did youd stop yourself before ending up in a position where thousands of sexual assault survivors learn they supported you, a rapist

Not wanting an abuser to be working in a public facing position is not the same as casting them into exile
I know it feels that way when you're a fan of their public facing content, but that's kinda why it matters that they shouldn't be in that position

very disappointed in the jacob geller situation. it's already fucked up that the victim didn't get any say, but the thing that did him in was a document the U.S. government legally forced the university to release to the public in 2020 - so the expose was inevitable.
