On June 2, 189ı, the daughter of the then-Chief Forester Ohrt and the Leipzig chocolate manufacturer Schütte-Felsche were married under this oak tree—and this is how it happened... The young woman’s father initially disapproved of her relationship with the chocolate manufacturer. The couple secretly exchanged messages and vows of love, using the knothole in this gnarled, ancient oak tree. When the forester finally relented, the young couple exchanged vows under this tree. Spa guests who had heard of this “happy romance” spread the story of the oak, and that is how it came to be known by its beautiful name, the “Bräutigamseiche” (Groom’s Oak). Since 1927, the oak has had its own mailing address: Bräutigamseiche Dodauer Forest 23701 Eutin Today, up to 40 letters from all over the world arrive at the oak tree every day. The privacy of correspondence does not apply here: Anyone can take out the letters, read them, and, if interested, take them with them; otherwise, they’re simply put back into the knothole. With over 100 matchmaking successes to date, the Bräutigamseiche more than lives up to its name. The oak’s history stretches far back: According to legend, 500 years ago, a Celtic prince—who had been bound by enemies and left behind in the Dodauer Forest—was found and freed by a young girl. To thank her for saving him, the nobleman planted that delicate oak sapling, whose trunk now measures nearly five meters in circumference. A few years ago, experts confirmed that the oak is in good health. Deutsche Post is therefore confident that the oak can continue to serve as a “love mailbox” for many generations to come.
