I'll be discussing Books/Publishing/Culture/Me.

Hey - it could be worse; I could be starting a podcast! 😅 substack.com/@daniellebinks

The best piece of news, after a relentless and brutal attempt to destroy a decent person and make an example of her, to scare others to silence.
No thanks to the mainstream, which said and did nothing to defend the principle of press freedom and her right to report fact and express an opinion.

A few thoughts on writing place in fiction, why it matters, and why it's the focus of my next masterclass (17 October, Melbourne).

A sense of place
Place in fiction is so much more than setting. Think of the mean city streets of detective noir, the high moors or lonely cabin, the claustrophobic sailing ship or space station, dusty country road…

Today you're going to see a lot of tributes and assessments of Gloria Steinem (I thought this one very good: www.thecut.com/article/glor...). You'll also see some people raising her involvement with the CIA, and others ignore it. (That obit doesn't even mentioned it.) What was that about?
Gloria Steinem Loved Women
The feminist icon, who has died at the age of 92, epitomized the contradictions and hopes of the women’s liberation movement.

By her own admission, Gloria Steinem knowingly accepted funding from the CIA.

She also spent most of her life as a TERF.

Fxck the gentry.
"The truth will set you free, but first it will piss you off." - Gloria Steinem

By her words and her example she pissed people off, set people free, and inspired generations of feminists (myself included) to live and write truth more boldly. What a legacy.

That’s what you sound like when you say you’re gonna pirate Harry Potter.
What if I pirate/buy second hand/etc. my Harry Potter stuff? You are still keeping her cultural relevance alive, which is how she keeps getting big money deals Also, you are immersing yourself in the creative output of a bigot. It is time to let it go. You are required to let it go.

Despite new regulations, some 70% of children aged 8-12 still have social media accounts
The report said this suggests that neither the Digital Services Act nor Ireland’s Online Safety Code are “yet to have any measurable effect on underage access”.
