I actually find the opening to this the most fascinatingly unhinged moment "why are the English the only group of people on the Earth who can't define themselves," is an argument that just does not hold up to a second's thought?

Is Kylian Mbappe not French because his dad was Cameroonian?

Not a novel observation by any means but the irony here, of course, is that it is precisely the UK’s successful approach to multiculturalism that has allowed us to generate a brown white nationalist.

Someone wishes for the good old days and the monkeys paw has decided we should do:
(1) a 1970s oil crisis
(2) a 1990s tech cycle
(3) a 2010s eurozone debt crisis

All at once.
That is a steep climb for the French-German spread...

Man City have shown zero remorse and are still belittling the legal process. Hard to see how they can expect any leniency.

such a good eg of why political argument matters - polling previously showed over 60% support for keeping triple lock. Argue to unlock it *for something people also want* & numbers can change. (Obv can change back again if someone makes a good argument against, but either way, politics=argument)
SNAP POLL / By 48% to 28%, Britons support Andy Burnham's proposal to change the triple lock in order to help fund part of a national care service

Thought this was an interesting point about the persona Burnham is building and how it will compare to Badenoch and Farage. Also I just find the dynamic between these two sooooo fascinating

As part of their punishment, Manchester City's budget is to be reduced each year in line with either inflation, wage increases, or 2.5% – whichever is the highest.

That is an absolutely massive sporting fraud.

This really should be the thing animating Burnham’s short term strategy. He has the big picture long term stuff down, for now he desperately needs to get rates down via fiscal consolidation and cooling inflation.
The bond yield story just keeps getting starker.

The actually refreshing bit about the Burnham speech is that he seems up for an argument, making a case and trying to convince people of something. Even acknowledged that trade-offs are a thing.

I really sincerely think this will happen and it will be HILARIOUS.
It will be funny if the Greens and Reform fall back under the weight of their own incompetencies, combined with tactical herding when the election comes, and so three years of "oooh, fragmentation" becomes "And it turns out it was all a dream".
Honestly it’s like a parody by this point isn’t it

Polanski’s “tax the rich” is the same as Badenoch’s “cut benefits”, a one-size-fits-all funding source that appeals to their prejudice but would never generate anything like the money they claim, and prevents them ever having to engage with serious politics

My basic take on Andy Burnham's speech: some stuff I agreed with, some stuff I found derisory, good to have a PM speech with an argument in it again. Unclear tho what the path to 'actually making it thru the next three years' is.
