These pre-Columbian ceramic figures have such distinctive faces, hairstyles, and patterns. Looking at them, it’s hard not to wonder about the people who made them and what these figures meant to them.

That truth might arrive one day wearing sequins, laughing at the solemnity of the room. And the next a suit and tie. You made the absurd into a kind of revelation a place where the impossible could become truth anyway. You reminded us that sometimes our mask is the most honest face we have, and sometimes becoming it is the only way to discover who we are. Now a strange star has gone dark. But there remains, glittering on the floor amidst the sequins and the leather the beautiful permission to be Deviant.

You made a life out of impossible things. A small beginning became something enormous, but you never seemed to confuse being enormous with being above anyone. You remembered where you came from. You carried the poor, the overlooked, the hungry, the frightened, the people who needed a reason to believe there might be something waiting for them beyond the circumstances they were born into. 1/2 Perhaps that is why losing you feels so much larger than losing one person. Because some people become landmarks. You could find your way by them. You could look toward their light and remember what decency looked like in a world that so often made cruelty look clever. Some people will leave. But some people also become part of the light by which we find our way home. 2/2

Fine. Something you pay when something is wrong. A coin dropped into the mouth of a machine that never gives change. A word left on the table after every other word has been taken away. It means agreement when you have no fight left. It means acceptance when acceptance is the only thing still within reach. It is the sound of surrender dressed up as composure. A tiny word with an entire war hidden inside it. Fine. Something you say when nothing is right.

Cut They cut the payment but the cold stayed. The meter still warned that credit was low. The fridge still hummed around an empty shelf. A mother still counted coins at the till, put back the fruit Nothing was lifted. Not the damp. Not the debt. Not the ache of making less reach further. But elsewhere a headline sharpened. A voice said scrounger, another said fraud, and slowly the distance widened. It became easier to look away. Easier to believe hunger had been chosen, that poverty was a habit, that need was somehow evidence against the needy. The cut did not make suffering smaller. It only made the circle of sympathy smaller. Cui bono?
