Q: Did you meet with Putin's envoy who was here today?

TRUMP: I did, yeah

Q: What did you discuss?

TRUMP: I can't tell you what we discussed, but there's going to be a big agreement and it's going to involve more than Ukraine. I could even say it might involve all of Europe.

It seems to me that the biggest short-term impact of the US midterms on Europe will be the firing of 🇺🇸Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth.

Either Trump fires him in the next 2 months or Democrats will impeach him. They have the numbers with several Republicans who hate him.

"I care quite little about what happens in other places," claimed Spain's Santiago Abascal yesterday.

An interesting claim given he congratulated Trump for getting the hispanic vote in 2024, and he's organised summits for the far-right across Europe and America.
Europe’s far right is scrambling to take distance from Trump
Le Pen, Meloni, Abascal, Weidel, Farage, Nawrocki and Wilders all embraced Trump when he looked untouchable – and accepted MAGA support. After Trump’s midterms defeat, they will change their tune.

Donald Trump has spent two years insulting, threatening and extorting Europe. So it's no secret that most European leaders are quite pleased to see his big loss last night, even though they've been diplomatic about it.

But they also know Congress doesn't control foreign policy.

Today will be a day of celebration and relief for many in America.

But there are tough questions ahead, including how to restore the rule of law and hold the Trump administration accountable for what they've done.

Events in Poland show how hard that is.
Poland’s turmoil shows the challenge for Democrats
A constitutional crisis is unfolding in Warsaw as the centrist government tries to undo the rule-of-law dismantling of the previous far-right government.

For 2 years, Donald Trump has had an air of invincibility. That has guided the timid way European leaders have responded to him.

If Democrats take control of Congress, practically it won't make much difference to US foreign policy. But could it give European leaders the courage to stand up to him?

More spending alone won't cut it.

European leaders want to explain away Trump's statements about having been given Greenland as harmless delusion. It's not.

This line is being repeated by the US State Department.

The US government now believes it owns Greenland. They will act accordingly in the coming months.

While European obsession with US elections is understandable, particularly now, it's symptomatic of this continent's failure to grow up

Imagine if all that time & energy passively consuming 🇺🇸politics were instead spent on building an independent EU

Another US election, another night of all-night breathless coverage by European media.

Europeans should spend less time obsessing over American politics and more time building a Europe in which US elections aren't treated as more important than their own.
Once again, Europeans look to Daddy America to save them
Even if Democrats take the House and Senate in today’s election, US aggression toward Europe is likely to remain unchanged. In fact it may only get worse, as Trump lashes out using his remaining power

A sobering reminder that even if Democrats do take control of 🇺🇸Congress in today's vote, it's very unlikely to stop the US aggression toward Europe.

In fact, it's likely to make things worse - because Trump will focus exclusively on foreign actions, which the Congress is mostly unable to block.

Supermarket refrigerators across Europe today were hacked in a cyberattack which rose their temperatures to levels which spoiled food.

The EU's Agriculture Commissioner called it a "deliberate attempt to disrupt our food supply chain", and cybersecurity experts suspect a state actor is behind it.

I really feel for those European students studying in the UK (and vice versa) between 2021 and 2027 who paid 5 times higher than they should have, simply because they happened to go to school during the Tories' Brexit folly period.

When Trump is gone and people are looking back at this time in history, I hope no one says how the Constitution saved the USA. A more competent dictator than Trump would have finished the job off, the country was saved only by self eating nature of the far right.
