Surprise storm chase yesterday in southwestern Ontario as the environment ahead of a cold front turned out to be more storm-conducive than had been forecast all week. Elevated supercells with some large hail. Put on a good lightning show after sunset :-) #ONstorm

So that makes 6 tornadoes recorded so far for PEI in 2026, including one that caused EF1 damage. A good number of these were associated with thunderstorms, possibly supercells. Big number for the smallest of provinces. #PEstorm

Toronto got lucky with this storm on Sep 2. An HP supercell through the city with isolated large hail and downburst winds, but didn't quite have its low-level rotation together until it got to New York where it produced EF0 and EF1 tornadoes. Given the environment that day, far worse was possible.
The NTP-confirmed downburst that hit the northwestern part of Toronto on September 2 had damage rated at EF0. An NTP ground survey documented damage to homes, apartments and trees in the area.

If we take a big step back, Homo Sapiens existed for about 300,000 years before the first commercial oil wells in the 1800s. In less than *200 years* - a historical blip - we have so polluted our natural environment by burning oil and gas that the planetary damage will last well past 7 generations.
The new Canada's Changing Climate Report 2026 is a sobering read. Even if greenhouse gas emissions stopped tomorrow, the warming / impacts are locked in for centuries. I was a lead author for Ch 8 on extremes - lots of uncertainty.

Please at least read the summary:

I deal with broadcast media across Canada, and almost without fail they'll provide interview times in standard time even when they're in daylight time i.e. EST instead of EDT. For such a time-focused business it's surprising. Why not just just 'eastern time' ET? Maybe a media friend can explain :-)

Back end of now Orange-warned severe thunderstorm passing just east of Londontario. Maenacing looking but harmless ‘whale’s mouth’ clouds behind the gust front. Didn’t see any obvious rotation. #ONstorm #LdnOnt

Here at @westernu.ca, they just conducted a monthly test of the tornado siren at noon. May be the real thing later this afternoon.

Monitor @environmentca.bsky.social alerts and keep an eye on the skies today in southern Ontario.

Heads up in southern Ontario! The ingredients are coming together for what could be the biggest storm day of the year. Particularly for the area north of London to the GTA. Monitor Environment Canada alerts and keep eyes on the skies today. Here's hoping the worst doesn't happen. #ONstorm

Canada recently lost one of its legendary meteorologists - Jim Bruce, age 97. Started his career in 1948 and rose to great heights - head of AES (now MSC), established the flood warning system for Ontario, a leader at the WMO, Nobel winner with IPCC members, Order of Canada, and much much more. RIP.

FYI, the name Lake Ontario is recognized internationally, appears in federal legislation on both sides of the border, and is embedded in treaties dating back more than a century. Because the Lake is shared, neither country can *legally* rename it. But the orange felon just did. #AmericanIdiot

So nice of US lead trade negotiator Jamieson Greer to gaslight Canadians on our own public broadcaster. And CBC, why give him the platform to spread lies on behalf of the orange menace? Just to say you have the ‘exclusive’ story? Barton barely pushed back. You got played. Do better, CBC.

I thought the orange menace would eventually go there. This is one of many 'shock and awe' actions he will threaten to take to try to break Canada and force us to comply. He's only getting started - it will get worse once Carney announces retaliation plans today. Better buckle up fellow Canadians.

I've seen a lot of waterspout photos and video, and have taken some myself, but have never seen this quasi-steady state 'corkscrew' structure before. I think it's rare with tornadoes over land as well. @chrisknoxphotog.bsky.social captured something special with this one over Lake Ontario!
A quick clip of this morning's waterspout over Lake Ontario, just west of Presqu'ile Provincial Park. This came within 500m or so of the shore before it fell apart in heavy rain.
