Will banning AI in NYC schools work?
As New York City restricts generative AI for younger children, CUNY education experts consider how schoosl can protect learning while preparing students for an AI-filled world.

As New York City public school students returned to classrooms this fall under sweeping restrictions on artificial intelligence in schools, CUNY education experts share their insights.

Given how deeply AI is already embedded in society, Professor Stephen Farenga.said failing to teach students how to use it could itself be dangerous.

“When you go to ban something outright, it almost makes it more desirable for people to want to look at and to want to get into,” Farenga said.

Queens College Professor Salvatore Garofalo said students need to learn to approach AI output critically, bringing their own knowledge to bear and questioning what the technology produces.
“If you don’t have that skill, if you’re not taught that skill, and if you don’t teach that skill,” Garofalo said, “then we become servants to the AI.”

Professor David Bloomfield says he prefers to leave the decisions about AI to schools and districts, not governments.
“The two concepts that come to mind are flexibility and educational expertise, neither of which the legislature has,” Bloomfield said.
