It's amazing to watch as previously normal people, coworkers, catch AI fever and turn into elbow-throwing, break-shit-fix-it-later assholes. It's like half the white collar population was just waiting for an excuse to do awful work and then demand praise for it

Around noon that day I was on the road in northern MN when a crop-duster plane flew right overhead (airspace was already closed) and my cheeks instinctively tightened
Everyone post your most insane 9/11 local freak out!

Some people were thinking we might be a target because some highschool kids were interviewed about Bush choking on a pretzel so that made us a target

My noisy little town was so quiet there that I started to wonder if Today Was The Day It Happened

33 to go; not canned yet
37 months dealing with “AI is the solution to all our problems” before I retire

Not gonna make it

Apropos of nothing but here’s a photo I took of an East German watchtower on the Saxony-Anhalt border

For some reason I just remembered being in Italy and seeing a guy with a tshirt that said, in enormous letters, “Fuck It, I Love Gym”

Why???

Drawing paychecks from an AI-frothy employer by day

Resisting AI data center development by night

This is not how I expected my career to wind down

Today was the day of my company’s annual anonymous employee satisfaction survey and ohhhmygawd it has never felt better to give feedback

It's September 1, which the MSM has reminded me a bazillion times already is the first day of the 11 Days of 9/11.

Can we just skip to 9/12 please?

I will forever admire Wendell Berry's insistence on living his values through to their natural conclusions and relentlessly ripping through layers of politeness and habit to hold up for judgment those who do not.

I propose FedEx Field in the east and Oakland Coliseum in the west to house ICE criminals while they await trial and sentencing. Nothing but the worst open-air experience for them.
NEW: Evidence filed in a Colorado case reveals how ICE officers are arresting people without a warrant, which is illegal unless ICE determines the person is a flight risk.

A man was dragged from his car after ICE showed him a warrant for someone else and refused to check his ID to see his identity.

I’ve had two eye surgeries this summer and as a result have been reduced to a homebound complaining bag of goo. Now that I’m starting to feel better, I’m getting ready to rip shit up this fall. I need action ideas.

There are days when the depth of the rot is so apparent that it feels impossible to imagine us ever getting out of it

On any given day, you can jack off with your lawnmowers, weedwhackers, edgers, leafblowers, chainsaws, logging trucks, coal rollers, snowblowers, and snowplows, but sure, *I* am the asshole when I flip you the double bird for ruining the quiet

It really hurts to read this. Don’t Look Up came out in my most active climate resistance (as in, do stuff that can get you arrested) period. It was exciting to see a motion picture about climate change… but now it feels like the efforts we all expended were for naught.

Sorry for the doomerism.
I can’t watch it anymore.
When we made it there was still a window for urgent action at scale.
Now the window is “brace yourself.”

*I remember doing media for it and meeting elected officials in the U.S. and UK and being stunned how little clue or care about climate they had. It was scary.

Contemplating diving into the AI battle at work. Is it worth fighting the bros who are destroying my four decades of experience in technical content development? Or should I skulk in a dark corner until the pink slip inevitably comes?

Is it possible that Vermont is finally going to have a July 10 without flooding?
July 10, 2026 at 4:03 PM
They shut down main street for a July 4 parade here in my small Vermont town.

Until the parade kicks in, there’s no traffic noise - no big trucks, no revving motorcycles.

For an hour a year, it’s bliss.
