Here is a little sneak preview of some recent fish illustrations! These are the four subspecies of cutthroat trout found in CO. The differences are subtle, but they’re there - can you tell them apart?

My illustration of a perched Great Horned Owl in a swamp at night. I was writing a section of my book "PONDS: An Illustrated Guide" on nocturnal predators in freshwater environments, and I realized that I could repurpose an older GHO illustration of mine. I shot a local marsh at night for the purpose, and added a separate tele shot of the moon to light the scene.

This is a black-and-white pen drawing of a Rio Grande silvery minnow, labeled with its common name and its scientific name (Hybognathus amarus) as well as its average size (3.5” in length). This is an infographic about the bowmouth guitarfish (Rhina ancylostoma) and its dentition. Drawings show the whole animal, a ventral view of its mouth and gills, and its jawbones. Text reads as follows: The bowmouth guitarfish is a large demersal fish native to the warm waters of the Indo-West Pacific Ocean. These unique fish are unfortunately critically endangered, but they generally fare well in captivity and can be seen in aquariums around the world. Despite their elongated bodies, bowmouth guitarfish are rays. Adults may approach 9’ in length. They are armored for sally with ridges of bony thorns over their eyes and along their backs, and dappled with lighter spots. As with other rays, the guitarfish’s mouth, nose, and gills are positioned ventrally - on the underside of its head. Bowmouths feed on smaller seafloor dwellers: crustaceans, mollusks, and other fish. Fun little experiment in style for the first day of #MothMay. My take on a mint moth, which I had not heard of before, but have striking colors!

Remember when I said I needed to draw more newts? This marbled newt (Triturus marmoratus) is small, but now I have the itch. I definitely need to add more amphibians to my repertoire!

Here we have a swallowtail butterfly (Papilio multicaudata) throughout multiple stages of its life - egg, caterpillar, chrysalis, and imago - perched on a branch of its host plant, the chokecherry tree (Prunus virginiana)!

I don't know how to express this in a way that makes sense but my art improved by leaps and bounds once I realized it is less about translating exactly what you see onto paper than it is about creating an illusion in the viewer's eye of what you are seeing (and there are tricks, just like in magic.)
