Remember when I said I needed to draw more newts? This marbled newt (Triturus marmoratus) is small, but now I have the itch. I definitely need to add more amphibians to my repertoire!

swallowtail and chokecherry / colored pencil on 14x17 Duralar / 2023

Here we have a swallowtail butterfly (Papilio multicaudata) throughout multiple stages of its life - egg, caterpillar, chrysalis, and imago - perched on a branch of its host plant, the chokecherry tree (Prunus virginiana)!

I don't know how to express this in a way that makes sense but my art improved by leaps and bounds once I realized it is less about translating exactly what you see onto paper than it is about creating an illusion in the viewer's eye of what you are seeing (and there are tricks, just like in magic.)

Colorado hydrological map / graphite and digital / 2025

Here it is, folks - my first map is finished (for now)! This is a pretty comprehensive look at the various and sundry bodies of water crisscrossing my beautiful home state. This map will be part of an upcoming field guide project! Stay tuned 👀
