‘Antisemitism isn’t systemic’ is the Left’s version of ‘the world’s oldest hatred’. An easy slogan that is in fact a sign of impoverished thought, a stubborn unwillingness to think critically & rigorously. One hyperbolizes, the other minimizes;

Story time again. Since I’m already seeing grumbling about potential 2028 Democratic Presidential candidates from the usual suspects, I’m going to put this out there; THERE IS NO CANDIDATE WHO WILL CHECK EVERY BOX. The object is to vote for harm reduction.

FAO @handle.invalid you may wish to bring this to the attention of Professor Ogburn.
This Finnish guy has been teaching himself Sumerian, and sent a cuneiform tablet to the British Museum to check his progress.

They just emailed him that they've sent him something in the post.

I'm now thrilled and excited for a total stranger! Clay tablet mail!

Do yourself a favor and leave your phone in the other room. Pick up a book and read it uninterrupted for a long time. Pay attention and notice how good it feels not to be constantly interrupted by digital notifications. It's a miracle that we used to live like this. We don't know what we're missing.

This encapsulates a great deal. As an African you notice that the UK doesn’t know how to contend with blackness except from a lens of disparity. Whether you’re the son of an oil baron or a farmer, once you enter the UK academic system the assumption is you come from lack because you are black.
As a woman, who isn’t feminine, won’t perform middle-class identity, who doesn’t aspire to class and status, an unashamed northerner, who won’t hide the accent, English academia is about the fight. You fight to get in, you fight to be taken seriously by male colleagues, and you fight to stay.

As a philosopher I hate to say it but I agree. Because narrowly in philosophy we do, genuinely, use "social construct" to neutrally classify a class of things in social ontology. But we're clearly outliers in this in the humanities, and the vulgar usage better gets the typical spirit of the thing.
"social construct" = "thing I don't like" is a case where the vulgar usage of something isn't actually that different from its academic deployment
