Twenty-three years ago, The Dead 2003 Summer Getaway tour swings into action again, on the west coast. First in Irvine. What an opener of Help>Hard To Handle, Joan just crushed the vocals on, coming back to Franklin’s to end set 2, before a We Bid You Goodnight encore.

Forty-eight years ago. Night 2 at the Giza Sound and Light Theatre at the base of the Great Pyramids. Mixing issues continue to plague the vocals early in the show. Parts of this show and the final night were released as Rockin’ The Cradle, along with some video footage.

Taking a few to remember and honor Judge Murphy, the “smoky” voice of Zero, and as Martin always liked to say, “the Yosemite Sam of rock n roll”. Beyond being an incredible voice, he was a loving husband and father. Thinking of Lauren & Lyba today as well.

Fifty-four years ago from the Hollywood Palladium, night 2 of 2. Bertha opens, and Black Throated Wind, an outstanding Bird Song and Playin’ highlight set 1. Set 2 features a 32+ minute Dark Star, with David Crosby joining in and staying for the rest of the set.

Fifty-three years ago at Nassau County Coliseum. A show quite high on Dick Latvala’s list of shows to release. Finally made it out as Dave’s Picks 38.
The first shows with Garcia’s Wolf.
Amazing WRS ends set 1. Set 2 had a great Eyes, and a China/Rider midway through.

Fifty-two years and three days ago from the Lion’s Share in San Anselmo. Along with Miles’ All Blues, was a version of Darben The Redd Foxx by James Moody.
The band for this night included Garcia, Saunders, Merl’s son Tony on bass, Bill Kreutzmann and Martin Fierro.

Fifty-three years ago, first night of a three night run at Nassau County Coliseum. Let’s breakout the “Wolf” (even if it wasn’t called that yet) for its first appearance with the Grateful Dead. The Bird Song & Playin’ in set 1 and Eyes in set 2 really stand out!

Thirty-six years ago in Richfield, OH. The Vince Welnick era of the Grateful Dead began, a mere 42 days after Brent Mydland’s shocking death. Bruce Hornsby would soon join the band as well, to help them get over the hump so to speak, but was unavailable for these gigs.
