🧵 Why are we suing the Calgary Police?

It’s hard to describe what happens to you physiologically while being smeared in public by powerful people. It’s a mix of uncertainty, fear, frustration, rage, indignation, and anguish, on a thick layer of pity — for self and others you know are in it, too. 1/

The most reliable way to lose in politics is letting your adversary define the terms. For example, if you're an artist and you let your boss define the AI fight, he'll make it about "IP" (not labor) and ask your help winning a fight to make him richer and you poorer:

Quote: "...push back against the Alberta government’s discriminatory narrative.

“People who have been here for multiple generations, or who have been here for decades, feel like something has really changed, that racism is coming from the very top of the government.”"

Exactly. And we're not wrong.
Last week, Smith posted on social media that “For every $1 of taxes a guest worker generates, taxpayers are covering $10 in services.”

While this figure might ring true for many, it is far from accurate.

I fact-checked Smith’s claims in my latest for @thetyee.ca

Decrim never happened in BC. It was just a smokescreen to stall demands for drug user liberation, and another betrayal of public trust by police.
