NEW REVIEW! This week, a lovely jaunt in the sunshine to discover what has to be the best value set lunch I have ever encountered. This is one to make a note of, believe me.

Restaurant review: Mignonette, Richmond

NEW REVIEW! In 2012, Sapana Home was the restaurant that introduced Reading to the joy of momo. But how is it bearing up, now that momo can be found across Reading? I went back to investigate:

Restaurant review: Sapana Home
I meet Graeme off his train back from London. He is smartly dressed and layered up, because he has come from work and because he knows that it’s autumn. I am slightly parky in shorts and a sh…

NEW REVIEW! This week’s review takes me back to Oxford. Gees is a gorgeous restaurant that has never lived up to its potential, Nick Galer is a talented chef that has never quite found his home. Could this be the start of a beautiful friendship?

ediblereading.com/2026/09/11/r...
Restaurant review: Gees, Oxford
The more observant among you, and my regular readers out there, might well wonder if the title of this week’s review is a mistake. Because I reviewed Gees, one of Oxford’s most venerabl…

NEW REVIEW! This week, I head to Eatnua Thai Street Food and get an accidental crash course in what makes Reading better.

Restaurant review: Eatnua Thai Street Food
The thing that struck me last week when I walked into Eatnua Thai Street Food (I’ll call it Nua from now on, if you don’t mind), the restaurant that opened last summer in the spot previously occupi…

NEW REVIEW! This week, the best pizza I’ve had in this country *and* a spot of time travel. How is this even possible? Click the link to find out.

Restaurant review: Mono Pizza, Basingstoke
There’s an exhibition on at the Willis Museum in Basingstoke called I Grew Up 90s, and speaking as someone who tried and failed to grow up back then I felt I had to go and experience it, even…

NEW REVIEW! This week, out into the multiverse - or, as most people like to call it, Pangbourne. No. 11 is an independent bistro in a lovely little village that’s easy to get to. Sounds like a unicorn, so is there a catch?

ediblereading.com/2026/08/21/r...
Restaurant review: No. 11 Bistro, Pangbourne
This might be hard to believe, but a couple of years ago I nearly ended up moving to Pangbourne. Well, sort of. Zoë and I were quite happy in our little house in the Village, and then one day I got…

NEW REVIEW! Angelo’s is Reading’s most anticipated restaurant of the year. Can it succeed in the town centre where so many big names have failed to impress? Only one way to find out… #rdguk

Have you been to Angelo’s, the new Italian restaurant in the town centre, yet? And have you been asked whether you’ve been there yet? The thing is, people keep asking me if I’ve e…

NEW REVIEW! This week, I travel to a restaurant that’s held a Michelin star since before the days of smartphones and blogs. We probably won’t see its like again, but was it a meal or a pilgrimage?

Restaurant review: Le Champignon Sauvage, Cheltenham

NEW REVIEW! This week: is Caversham the only part of Reading immune from enshittification, and does Greek restaurant Spitiko play a part in that?

ediblereading.com/2026/07/31/r...
Restaurant review: Spitiko
Having written about and celebrated Reading and its independent scene for nearly 13 years, one thing that has always irritated me is people who live to run the place down. You see them popping up o…

Some more pictures of beautiful Bruges for you.
July 20, 2026 at 9:57 AM
In case you missed it on Friday, the new blog post is a brand new, almost-exhaustive guide to the best food and drink in Bruges, a stunning city that has a lot going on beneath its picture-perfect surface. Hope you enjoy!

Evan’s piece is a fantastic intro to Bruges with all the useful cultural and sightseeing info mine is missing - well worth a read!
Here's a gift link to my latest NYT travel piece, 36 Hours in Bruges.
Brugge is a charming town with a lot going on, including an excellent new art space, Brusk (esp. the Bigger Picture exhibit). Cool bars, cafes & restaurants.
Plus Greet Verbeke’s curios & antiques.

36 Hours in Bruges, Belgium: Things to Do and See (Gift Article)
Like the works of the Flemish painters who once inhabited the city, Bruges’s appeal lies in the details.

This is a great guide to food & drink in Bruges — I wish I’d seen it before I wrote up 36 Hours in Bruges for the NYT, out now. (Service was slow & prices high at a certain steakhouse, so I didn’t include it; I loved Avi’38, Shibuya & Dees in this guide. Cult & Mosh, not listed here, also rock.)

No new post up on the blog yesterday, as I’m working on a labour of love: my expanded, brand new, verging on definitive guide to eating and drinking in Bruges. Comes out next Friday, and hopefully worth the wait.
July 11, 2026 at 8:42 AM
Coming up next on the blog, as close to a definitive city guide to Bruges food and drink as you're likely to find in 2026. Plenty of work, but hopefully rewards for plenty of travellers, given that the current guide has been seen by over 35,000 people worldwide.

NEW REVIEW! This week, what Reading and Oxford have in common - a dearth of good independent restaurants in the centre.

Restaurant review: No. 1 Ship Street, Oxford
Oxford, probably my favourite city in which to review restaurants, ostensibly has little in common with Reading. One has pretty old buildings and winding lanes, a shopping mall that doesn’t b…

NEW REVIEW! This week, I finally make it to one of last year's big Reading openings, Pho 86. Is there a fine line between subtle and bland, and which side of it does this fall on? #rdguk
