After several years of work, I'm happy to share that the main project from my PhD is now published in Nature Microbiology. We show that the skin commensal Malassezia produces tryptophan-derived indoles that activate AhR promoting skin barrier function and tissue homeostasis.

We’re excited to announce our next seminar on June 18 at 11:30! Join us at UZH Irchel or online for talks by @seppedeschepper.bsky.social on the gut–brain axis in Parkinson’s disease and @laura-moberbichler.bsky.social on the IRF5–PPARγ axis in neuroinflammation. See the flyer for more details.

The rules of immunity are different in early life! Lead author Dr. Yue Xing finds that early life DCs sense allergens and trigger inflammation directly in skin. This in-situ activation state emerges from a developing HPA and low glucocorticoids. #Naiklab @nature.com

Peripheral immune-inducer dendritic cells drive early-life allergic inflammation - Nature
Early-life exposure to allergens triggers a distinct local mode of dendritic cell activation in neonatal skin without requiring migration to lymph nodes, which shapes responses to allergens in later l...

Excited to share our lab’s latest preprint: In vivo single-cell CRISPR screening for microproteins identifies a critical ribosomal component.

Check out how we systematically explore #microprotein functions and how they expand the cellular proteome!
Our genome encodes > 7000 microproteins that have been previously ignored in genome annotations. How do these microproteins impact tissue function? Here, we use an in vivo single-cell CRISPR screen to systematically explore microprotein function in the mouse epidermis. 1/9

We show that the commensal fungus Malassezia promotes skin barrier function via AhR signaling, through secreted tryptophan-derived indoles.
The skin commensal yeast Malassezia promotes tissue homeostasis via the aryl hydrocarbon receptor
As an abundant fungal colonizer of human skin, Malassezia has long been associated with pathological skin conditions, yet its role in skin homeostasis remain poorly understood. Here, we demonstrate th...

"Ultimately, these changes lead to insufficient activation of a pathway controlled by the aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AHR)"

not to be that smug guy on the Internet but this is why I keep yelling about AhR and Regulatory T cells and immune conditions

I wanted to share some info about the immune system, dysbiosis, and food intolerances that I think might be relevant to a lot of folks. Please note that there's still a lot of scientific debate about ...
