Hands-on paleontology in Montana.
Research. Education. Outreach.
Dinosaur digs, field courses, research, and behind-the-scenes science!
Thank you to Keith Guerin for sponsoring a field jacket for the 2026 season!

This jacket is what we call a "JJ", made for smaller fossils that need a little extra protection for transport. Inside the jacket is a sauropod (🦕) vertebra, likely a caudal, which is part of the dinosaur's tail.

With all the advancements in technology today, is there a point to continue with actual "boots on the ground" fieldwork? We're here to tell you... Yes.

Check out this latest story, featuring some of our field staff, to learn why going out into the field in the name of science is irreplaceable.

Why are public lands so important?

Public lands provide important habitats to native flora and fauna, clean water for local communities, and connections to our history and cultures.

Get outside as much as you can. Visit your local parks and enjoy what nature has to offer. Love your public lands!

Many thanks to Alistair Kraft, Paleo Prep Lab volunteer at the Cincinnati Museum Center, for sponsoring a field jacket for the 2026 field season!

This jacket holds several elements of dinosaur toes from the Skyewalker site, discovered by Hannah C. These toes were an exciting discovery this summer!

Someone's gotta get down in the dirt with the fossils... Guess that's us. 😎

Thank you to our good friend Chuck for sponsoring a field jacket this year!

This jacket contains sauropod (🦕) fossils from our Skyewalker locality. This site developed so much over the 2026 season, with possibly multiple species showing up in the fossil layer!

We miss you, Chuck!

How do paleontologists extract large blocks of fossils?

On today's Fossil Friday, come with us to see how it's done!

A jaw-some time at Alabama Fossil Fest! 🦈

Over 500 people showed up from near and far to learn more about paleontology — how amazing is that!?

Thank you for having us!

Bonus pics from this year's Red Lodge Fun Run!

Rick had a great time chatting with folks from all over, especially about dinosaurs and the important work we do at Elevation Science. It's incredible to see so many people interested in science education!

Thanks to our friend Don for the pictures!

Thank you to Bonnie for sponsoring a field jacket for the 2026 field season!

This jacket is from our SWB quarry, which contains one sauropod (long-neck dinosaur) and theropod (likely Allosaurus). The jacket is protecting a humerus (upper arm bone) belonging to the sauropod. How funny!

...Get it?

The end of field season brings on some bittersweet feelings. Although we are home once again, we do find ourselves missing the field. For 8 weeks, we work together not only as a team but as a family.

If you're missing us, and the dinosaurs, just know that we miss you too!

Huge thank you to Hannah for sponsoring M&M this year, a very fun site with several types of Jurassic dinosaurs!

A great summer with our 2026 field interns!

Listen in as Chal and Matthew tell us some important skills they developed during their time in the field with us.

Thank you to the David B. Jones Foundation for making opportunities like these possible!

Looking back on yet another incredible field season!

Thank you to everyone who hunted for new fossils, got down in the dirt, stuck their hands in plaster, shoveled to the max, hauled tools and jackets, and appreciated science and nature with us. We couldn't do this without you!

"In honor of my brave daughter for her 1st solo trip in Belize! Proud of you, Lilly!"

Thanks to our very own Executive Director, Jason Schein, for sponsoring a field jacket this year... And in honor of his daughter at that! What could be better than honoring someone than with dinosaurs?
