I double-checked this on a couple of Xitter stat sites and it's true. Average views of the main AfD account dropped 90% and average engagement dropped by 60%. This is commercial social media for you: bots, damn bots and Russian bots.
We’ve been talking about this for years.

people are spamming subreddits this morning with an old tweet from Niki Sharma (BC attorney general) about "Vanpoli so white" trying to portray her as racist. give me a fucking break, do you know that Vancouver has not had a South Asian council member since Setty Pendakur in the 1970s?

I don’t like conflict: it felt weird when I kept calling out the NDP claiming they were comparatively transparent for pandemic data when that was a blatant falsehood, and it felt weird having twitter spats with senior police officers over data analysis

hopefully the latter is now in the past!

The deputy police chief said today that “taking small data snapshots at specific points in time and presenting them as a constant doesn't work.”

Very true.

anyways here’s him telling me why it didn’t matter that crime was down in 2020

We came close. Unfortunately a city planner who we thought was an ally showed up at the hearing and threw the project under the bus with a bunch of untrue statements that swayed the board (and we couldn’t appeal).

I’m not bitter

Anyway Happy Friday!

Remembering the Skinny House (RIP)

Our proposal for a 9' wide home (on our 9'x60' east van lot) that was denied by the board of variance (3 to 2 vote).

Alas perhaps someday the RT-5 zoning will have enough discretion to allow interesting oddities in our city.

New working paper: the Norwegian wealth tax was a huge success. The "exodus" of wealthy people never happened (less than 100 individuals left). Tax revenue increased by 71.5%. No changes in business activity or investment.

Such a cute yet strategic way of advancing the pedestrianization of streets. No advocacy or political jargon. No use of the word “closure” just here’s a map of safe, fun places for people. 👌🏾

How do we incentivize people to paint wizards on their vans again

I haven’t seen a wizard van in a decade and it feels like we lost something precious

Can we offer up a tax credit?

Little bags of shrooms?

Start a wizard van painting program at vocational schools?

This was the right thing to do. Stephanie Allen is truly amazing and we could not have asked for a better Mayoral candidate for COPE. We were truly blessed to have her agree to run for Mayor for us, and she did so without ego knowing that the decision today is one that she might have had to make.
COPE Mayoral Candidate Stephanie Allen is DROPPING out of the race.

Says she’s pulling out “for the good of the city.”

No statement on if they are endorsing, but COPE is very comfortable with supporting Pete Fry.
We’re about to have an update in Vancouver’s crowded mayoral race.

COPE is about to make an announcement outside city hall.

The nomination deadline is in nine days, and I can report that COPE’s Stephanie Allen, OneCity’s William Azaroff, and the Greens’ Pete Fry had a private meeting on Monday.
